Trade Paperback. Condizione: Near Fine. Speck, Jon - Photography (illustratore). First Printing. 126 Pages. A January 2006 Printing Limited to 500 Copies. No defects noted to this tight book with flawless interior pages. The Fiftieth Exhibition, held February 9 - April 29, 2006 in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries at Bridwell Library was the first devoted entirely to historic bookbindings. The Highlights of this exhibition are included in this book. Selected for their beauty, quality and historical interest, the 76 exhibited bindings of which 52 are shown in this book, exemplify the important stylistic developments of European and North American bookbinding from the late Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibit is not intended to be a comprehensive survey but as an introduction to the most splendid and well-made bindings owned by Bridwell Library. Included are works by binders from England, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and the United States. The earliest of all the Library's bindings entered the Dominican monastery at Graz, Austria in 1468 and is titled Biblia Latina. Emperor Fredrick III founded the monastery at Graz in 1466 and the Bible would have been on of the first books acquired. The binding features a circular stamp of the Arma Christi (instruments of Christ's Passion). Contents in Seven Chapters: Foreword, Introduction, Catalog of the Exhibition, Endnotes, Glossary, Index of Previous Owners, and Bibliography.
