Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 1985 I first began my research on the life and work of Harold Hotel ling. That year, Harold Hotelling's widow had donated the collection of his private p:;tpers, correspondence and manuscripts to the Butler Library, Columbia University. This is a most appropriate place for them to reside, in that Hotelling's most productive period as an active researcher in eco nomics and statistics coincides with the years when he was Professor of Mathematical Economics at Columbia (1931-1946). The Hotelling Collection comprises some 13,000 separate items and contains numerous unpublished letters and manuscripts of great importance to historians of economics and statistics. In the course of the following year I was able, with the generous financial assistance of the Nuffield Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy and the University of Durham, to spend six weeks over the Easter period working on the collection. I returned to New York in September 1986 while on sabbatical leave from the University of Durham, and I spent most of the following eight months examining the many documents in the collection. During that academic year I was grateful to Columbia University who gave me the title of Visiting Research Professor and gave me the freedom to work in their many well-stocked libraries.

Erste Ausgabe einer seiner Hauptarbeiten. - "Hotelling's best known statistical contributions in multivariate analysis remain vital and current to present times. These specifically include Hotelling's T2, principal components, and a number of correlational techniques. Hotelling (1931) had recognized that experiments often have multiple measurements on each individual, and thus multiple univariate t-tests would be correlated. Hotelling's elegant solution was to propose a vector formulation of Student's test which yields a quadratic form whose distribution under the null hypothesis is that of an F-distribution. In particular, he showed that the general distribution of the T2 does not depend on nuisance parameters, but only on a quadratic form in the population mean vector, in which the matrix of the quadratic form is the inverse of the population covariance matrix. In showing this, Hotelling made use of invariance, thereby anticipating a theory developed much later. The multivariate version of Student's t-statistic remains known as Hotelling's T2 statistic" (Encyclopedia of Mathematics). - Hotelling (1895-1973) gilt als einer der wichtigsten Statistiker und Ökonomen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. - Sauber und wohlerhalten.

We are most pleased to offer several archival lots of the papers of scholar, mathematician, statistician and economist, Harold Hotelling covering a period of nearly 70 years. His work is quite well known and perhaps to best familiarize or refresh yourself with it, we have prepared two biographical sketches in pdf format for the asking. These lots are broken down into several categories as follows with pdf files likewise provided for those interested: (1) Items written by, written to, written about, belonging to and presented to Harold Hotelling; (2) Items written by, written to, written about, belonging to and presented to Susanna Hotelling, the second wife of Harold Hotelling, likewise a scholar in her own right; (3) Items regarding the Hotelling's historic 1939 / 1940 trip to India; (4) Items written by, written to, or written about, friends and relatives of Harold and Susanna Hotelling; (5) A miscellany of other items. While these lots most likely contain some items that may not be unique and hence can be acquired elsewhere, many if not most of them indeed are unique and can only be found among this grouping. Among the highlights of this marvelous archive are over 55 letters from Hotelling; two large leather bound volumes entitled Selected Papers of Harold Hotelling which is unique; Hotelling's various diplomas of higher learning, from elementary school to Ph.D.; an INSCRIBED photo of former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn; a SIGNED document by his mentor Eric Temple Bell aka science fiction writer John Taine from 1920; a file of letters between Hotelling & James E. Webb which are of historical significance as they are almost certainly a direct link to the beginnings of McCarthyism; a 4 page SIGNED typed letter from Pierpaolo Luzzato Fegiz, professor of statistics at the University of Trento as well as another one page typed letter to Susanna Hotelling; a holographic letter SIGNED by fellow mathematician and scholar Howard Levene: 5 Letters from such Indian mathematical scholars as P. C. Mahalanobis; 2 SIGNED letters from Jawaharlal Nehru; A holograph letter SIGNED and dated April, 1929 to Susanna Edmondson from surrealist artist Spanish Urbano Lugris; a SIGNED letter by famous editor / author H. L. Mencken to same; a holographic 2 page letter SIGNED Ê and dated 9/23/1938 by mathematician William Gemmell Cochran; 3 SIGNED letters from renowned economist Frank Knight of the University of Chicago; a holographic 90 word letter in French SIGNEDÊ and dated 5/6/1942 by internationally known French mathematician & scientist Jaques Hadamard; a TYPED LETTER SIGNED dated 5/28/1976 to Sue Hotelling from mathematician, statistician and economist, Gerhard Tintner, etc. The archives themselves include many photos, journals, diaries, ledgers, essays, invitations, pamphlets, certificates, offprints, abstracts, letters, genealogies, newspaper clippings, biographies, personal artifacts, travel documents, addresses, speeches, broadsides, etc. An educator as well as researcher, Milton Friedman is just one of many students of Harold Hotteling who taught at the most prestigious universities in the U.S. All in all, a chance to purchase a unique archive and gain insight into the personal and academic life of this famous economist / statistician.

Very light miscolouring to wrappers, otherwise a very fine copy. Pp. 360-378. Scarce offprint of Hotelling's landmark paper on what was later termed as 'Confidence Intervals'. "Important as was his contribution to economics, most of his effort and his influence were felt in the field of mathematical statistics, particularly in the development of multivariate analysis. In a fundamental paper [the present], he generalized Student's test to the simultaneously test of hypotheses about the means of many variables with a joint normal distribution. In the course of this paper, he gave a correct statement of what were later termed 'confidence intervals'. (The New Palgrave).
