Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Clive is a quiet unassuming man who lives in relative comfort with his wife and two grown up children. His most obvious quality is a remarkable degree of gullibility. He had given up a well-paid job in industry to take up a position as carer in a sheltered housing scheme. This move led to Clive's contentment but his wife resented what she perceived as a major drop in her social standing. Clive's life takes a dramatic change when he receives a large inheritance from his former employer. Whilst most people would regard this as a welcome event, for Clive it only leads to massive disruption in his life. On a trip to a solicitor's office in Hull he attends a somewhat bizarre will reading. Whilst being completely innocent, he is subsequently accused of car theft, complicity in the death of its previous owner and adultery. Along with this he is faced with vast numbers of people who engage in a variety of schemes to try and relieve him of his new-found wealth. His naivety knows no bounds and it takes the efforts of his colleague Sally to try and drag him into the real world and ensure that he makes the best use of his money. All this happens against a backdrop of local government corruption as a councillor plans to close down the home where Clive and his co-workers support three adults with a variety of learning difficulties. Clive's ultimate response to his financial predicament and his marital situation is inventive.Whilst this book touches on some important issues it is essentially a story of gentle humour. Paperback. Condizione: New. When Georgia and Steve leave university and move to her home village of Hartbridge, they look forward to a happy life together. Georgia gradually introduces her boyfriend to many of the locals, including Stan whose life had been tragically affected when he was hit by a drunk hit and run driver some years earlier. In the local pub, they meet up with Mark, a young man with Down syndrome, who is renowned for his irrepressible good humour and sees himself as a stand-up comic with a tendency to tell jokes that benefit from his jovial delivery rather than any real comedic value. The idyllic start of their time as young lovers in this peaceful East Anglian location is disrupted by the unexplained death of one resident. This is investigated by the young local police constable, Danny Bright, whose eagerness to play at detective is hindered by his complete incompetence. No sooner has he failed to sort this matter than the mysterious disappearance of a local petty villain is another event that taxes his ineffectual detective powers. His work is not made any easier by the fact that half the village seem to have strong motives for wanting to see the back of the missing man.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Terry has a relatively comfortable life. He is still not yet thirty and he has a job he enjoys and a girlfriend he adores with whom he lives in a house he inherited from his grandmother. He spends his leisure time attending auctions and car boot sales where he purchases items which he identifies as bargains, some of which he hopes to sell on at a profit. He is mildly obsessed with the aim of making money on his deals and it is only when his girlfriend suddenly leaves him that he comes to realise that some of the most valuable things in life cannot be measured in monetary terms. The narrative follows Terry's attempts to get back together with her while also searching to find his mother who walked out of his life when he was a young boy. This is, in part, a study of the way individuals deal with the complex emotions we all experience in life and the relative difficulty many people have in expressing them. The story reflects on the fact that most people have an innate sense of justice and so, when things go wrong in life there may be an attempt to allocate - and sometimes assume - blame, even if no particular individual is wholly at fault.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. All his former colleagues at the Met had warned former Detective Inspector Alex Lucas against retiring to a place where he had spent childhood holidays, but now, even as he stood in the pouring rain looking out at the grey North Sea he knew they had been wrong. There he was, newly-retired and recently divorced, in a small Yorkshire harbour village where he had purchased a tiny cottage and settled to enjoy life in a supportive community which had its own approach to local fiscal policy where general practice is not to pester the Inland Revenue too much. As far as possible, jobs are done for friends and small contracts are settled in 'beer vouchers' with little paperwork. Alex is determined to get to know the locals but he is reluctant to disclose the fact that he is a former police officer in the fraud squad in case this alienates him from the community and their less than official interpretation of tax laws. He eventually realises that he cannot expect to be welcomed in to the village if he insists upon having such a secret and he gradually lets his guard down. All is pretty much perfect in his little Shangri-La, even when his former mother-in-law moves in to the village with her attempts to promote some form of reconciliation between him and his former wife. The main threat to his new life occurs when the village's only pub is threatened with closure, but the villagers will not go down without a fight.…
