Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The power of knowledge lies not only in generating ideas, but also in controlling their dispersion. For those who would seek to influence others, the dissemination of ideas is paramount. For those looking to protect the fruits of intellectual labor for reasons of profit or ethics, distribution is something to control. Either way, distribution is a key concern across the spectrum of cultural production, particularly at a time when digital networks have facilitated an unprecedented access to audiences.Bringing together contributors from a variety of backgrounds, Distributed presents the act of distribution as a subject of significant social and economic importance and argues that it merits serious creative consideration. From the attention-seeking impulse of the "influencer" to the democratization of art via books, performances, videos or sound, the increased urge to disseminate is explored here as an elemental phenomenon of our time. This new volume focusses attention on the act of distribution as a subject for serious creative consideration and one of great social and economic importance. Contributors from a variety of backgrounds paint a big picture that embraces the actions of the individual alongside the workings of global markets. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. To PhD or not to PhD: reflections from 30 artists-turned-doctoral candidatesIn the last three decades, creative practice disciplines, such as art, design, architecture, creative writing, fashion and others, have undergone a "research turn," strongly stimulated by doctoral programs to deepen artists' reflections on the roots, relevance and urgencies of their work. For Thinking Back, Making Forward, the editors issued an open call to ask artists, spanning disciplines and nationalities, how PhD research has influenced their making and thinking. Through its 30 contributions, the book tackles these questions in an open way, addressing equally the advantages and disadvantages of the creep of the PhD into artistic practice. Each essay delves into the personal experiences of the artist-academic, who discloses their creative, material and professional motivations for pursuing a doctorate. Whether driven by mentorship, archival access, structure, funding or a professorship, all of the contributors provide candid, in-depth reflections of their time in academia. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Hostings: Ocular Lab, 2003-10 documents and celebrates the eight-year history of Ocular Lab Inc., an artist-run initiative that occupied a disused milk bar in West Brunswick, Melbourne. The book features 96 pages of imagery, new essays by Stephen Zagala and Zara Stanhope, and a chronology of 'the Lab'. Hostings was produced on the occasion of the exhibition Ocular Lab Inc. at the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, 12 April - 5 May 2012. Describing Ocular Lab in Frieze magazine, Max Delany wrote: 'The activities and programme at Ocular Lab have evolved through a particular emphasis on hosting and dialogue and a desire for non-hierarchical collective processes. Ocular Lab dinners, held in the gallery space, often in honour of a visiting artist, became emblematic of a wider set of principles. The exhibition programme developed through individual members hosting projects, rather than by application or a committee judging process. Visiting artists always used the space rent-free, allowing for the space to be used in an open-ended spirit, often for process-based projects or as a temporary studio. And an array of international exchange projects took place in the space, ranging from artist talks and dinners through to longer-term site-specific projects.' The Ocular Lab membership was Damiano Bertoli, Sandra Bridie, Julie Davies, Raafat Ishak, Sean Loughrey, Jonathan Luker, Sally Mannall, Tom Nicholson, Elvis Richardson, and Alex Rizkalla. Previous members include John Abbate, Katherine Huang, Louise Paramor, Kirsten Rann, and Bernhard Sachs.
