For the celebrated Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944), one of the pioneers of Expressionism, the vibrant modern city of Copenhagen was both a bridge to Europe and an occasional refuge. Munch's lively exchanges with Danish artists and authors led to further intensive encounters with the art of Paul Gauguin, and also with Impressionism, Symbolism and Synthetism. During an existential crisis that began around the turn of the century and lasted until 1908, Munch time and again returned to Denmark. Rich in fascinating material, this book is the first to take a thorough look at Munch's complex relationship to this Scandinavian country, demonstrating the extent to which his Danish contacts influenced his reception of contemporary French painting, as well as his own early oeuvre. This volume presents lesser-known works made in and around Copenhagen and during Munch's seven-month stay in a psychiatric clinic.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Behind rolling hills, overlooking the fjord and the islands of Southern Funen, you will find Faaborg Museum. With its boldly coloured walls and decorative tile floors made from local clay, the building has quite literally sprung from Funen soil in a symbiosis of local nature and culture. Inside, visitors will find art by the Funen Painters, created during the period 1880 to 1928 when Faaborg was home to one of Denmarks pre-eminent artists colonies. With their paintings of rural Funen, farmworkers and domestic scenes, the artists Peter Hansen, Fritz and Anna Syberg, Jens Birkholm and Johannes Larsen introduced new subject matter and new methods of painting in Danish art.Faaborg Museum was founded in 1910 by Mads Rasmussen, art patron and manufacturer of tinned goods and preserves. The museum was intended as a celebration of the art created in and around Faaborg. Together with the artists, he commissioned the architect Carl Petersen to create a building to house the museums collection a building that is now acclaimed as a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture and embodies a rare union of art, architecture and design.Faaborg Museum and the Artists Colony presents the history of Faaborg Museum, its architecture, collection and artists to international audiences for the first time. Lavishly illustrated, the book features architectural photographs and plans as well as dozens of reproductions of the museums art. Hardcover. Condizione: As new. Square Quarto. Hardcover. Printed paper boards. No jacket, as issued. Illustrated end papers. 227 pages : color illustrations, color portraits ; 27 cm. "Denmark in the nineteenth century experienced the disastrous fallout of the Napoleonic Wars, the devastating bombardment of Copenhagen, bankruptcy, and mounting antagonism with Germany. Yet, this sociopolitical and economic tumult also gave rise to a vibrant cultural and philosophical environment for nineteenth-century Danish artists. Beyond the Light places the drawings, oil sketches, and paintings created by these artists firmly in this period, one that witnessed the transformation of a once-powerful Denmark into a small, somewhat marginalized country at the edge of Europe. Danish artists forged a close-knit community during this time, and the artworks they created explore notions of place, identity and belonging, and what it means to travel and return home. The exhibition features approximately 100 works from The Met collection, SMK - The National Gallery of Denmark, and several American collections, and highlights such artists as Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Constantin Hansen, Martinus Rørbye, and Vilhelm Hammershøi as well as lesser-known figures like Anton Melbye, Johan Thomas Lundbye, Peter Christian Skovgaard, and Heinrich Gustav Ferdinand Holm, among others. Five thematic essays by leading scholars in Denmark and the United States explore the way Danish artists manifested the pride, traditions, and anxieties of their nation; the sea's ever-changing role as a marker of Danish identity; the evolving nature of portraiture; nostalgia for the Danish landscape and folk traditions; and the influence on Danish artists of their travels throughout Europe." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art.
