Der Coautor Dr. Werner Esch (Hamburg) war ein weltweit anerkannter Kautschuk-Pionier. Er beriet in Hamburg als freiberuflicher Handelschemiker und Sachverständiger große Reedereien und Importhäuser. Und er entwickelte chemische Analyseverfahren, um die Reinheit und den Harzgehalt von Kautschuk mathematisch zu bestimmen. Sein Mitautor Adolf Heil war ein hochspezialisierter deutscher Ingenieur und Konstrukteur, der sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ganz auf die maschinelle und bauliche Ausrüstung von Kautschuk- und Gummifabriken fokussiert hatte. In dem Autorenduo der Gummiwaren-Fabrikation' übernahm er den ingenieurtechnischen und maschinenbaulichen Part, während sein Kollege, Dr. Werner Esch, der Verantwortliche für Kautschuk-Chemie war. Sie lieferten mit ihrem Buch die standardisierten Rezepte für die Vulkanisation, das Mastizieren und das Compoundieren (Mischen) von Rohkautschuk mit Füllstoffen. Für die Metallgesellschaft (MG) war dieses frühe Handbuch eine fundamentale, historische Pflichtanschaffung für den Aufbau ihrer eigenen Forschungs- und Handelsaktivitäten. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts explodierte durch das Aufkommen der Elektrotechnik (Kabelisolierungen) und der Automobilindustrie (Reifen) der weltweite Bedarf an Kautschuk. Da die MG ein global agierendes Rohstoff-Handelshaus war und zugleich die chemische Verwertung von Zinkoxiden und Schwefel vorantrieb (beides elementare Vulkanisationsbeschleuniger für die Gummi-Herstellung), nutzte ihr Technisches Labor dieses Handbuch von Heil und Esch als Standard-Rezepturbuch. Sie konnten so exakt prüfen, welche Qualitäten an Schwefel und Metalloxiden die Gummi-Fabrikanten für ihre Mischungen benötigten, um den boomenden Kautschukmarkt direkt mit konzerneigenen Chemikalien zu beliefern. Am Rande: der Verlagsname Steinkopff & Springer dokumentiert eine seltene, kurze verlegerische Kooperation in Dresden, bevor Theodor Steinkopff den Verlag allein übernahm.
