Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Between Self-Determination and Dependency analyses the nature and trajectory of Jamaica's foreign relations from 1972 to 1989. The central argument is that the relative autonomy of the Jamaican state declined due to the evolution of a new international regime which in effect disallowed the political, social and economic experimentation originally envisioned. Neither the attempt at radical nationalism by the People's National Party, nor the 'accommodationist' stance of the Jamaica Labour Party served to reduce Jamaica's structural dependency. The analysis factors in the political and economic interests and policies of both domestic and foreign social forces as they negotiated the foreign policies of the Jamaican state. Thus, the text employs a more holistic perspective. It departs from earlier studies that tended to focus on the diplomatic history of the country's foreign relations without illuminating the various co-determinants that defined the context of state action. An analysis of the nature and trajectory of Jamaica's foreign relations from 1972 to 1989. It argues that the relative autonomy of Jamaica declined due to the evolution of an international regime, which in effect disallowed the political, social and economic experimentation originally envisioned. In this new edited volume, Holger Henke and Fred Reno buildon their important collection ModernPolitical Culture in the Caribbean (2003) and revisit some of the themes inCaribbean political culture explored some eighteen years earlier. Thecontributors to New Political Culture in the Caribbean consider more recentdevelopments precipitating significant changes in the political attitudes anddiscourses in the region. Even the persistent themes in Caribbean politicallife - issues such as race, ethnicity, sovereignty, civil rights, or poverty -allow for new consideration, not only because of their longevity but alsobecause in their contemporary form they may speak to new dynamics in society orfind different forms of expression or political impact. The quality of political discourse - in terms of its contentand forms of presentation - has significantly shifted over the first decades ofthe twenty-first century, and the impact of social media and a concomitant riseof political fringe discourses have accelerated the fragmentation of the publicand polity, leading to sharper confrontations in the political sphere andgiving once again rise to crude forms of nationalism. There are also variousstressors and pressures that run counter to simplistic notions of nationalismand point to a great urgency for more transparent, sustainable, participatoryand equitable modalities of political engagement and discourses in theregion.

The West Indian Americans introduces students and other interested readers to the diversity and cultural individuality of a growing segment of the American immigrant community. After an introductory chapter that describes the history and people of Jamaica and the other English-speaking Caribbean nations, their migration to the United States and patterns of adjustment and adaptation are discussed. Next, the West Indian cultural traditions, transferred to this country especially the churches, literature, music, and festivals, are evoked. Another chapter covers family networks, return migration, and remittances to those members left behind in the West Indies. Final chapters examine the new challenges for the West Indian Americans, such as identity issues, education and job prospects, and gang and drug problems, and the contributions of West Indian immigrants.
