Bound in contemporary checked tree-calf. On the spine, 5 raised bands. Author gilt to red calf in the second panel, number gilt to green calf in the fourth. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block glazed yellow. Worn at the extremities, with losses to the head- and tail-pieces. Foxed throughout, sometimes heavily, and damp-stained in passages. Peripheral tanning throughout. Lacking 90 plates (those to voll. I and III). François André Michaux (1770-1855) accompanied his father André, botaniste royale to Louis XVI, to America in 1785. Together they explored the eastern part of the continent from Florida to Hudson's Bay, going as far west as the Mississippi. François returned to France in 1790 to study medicine, and despite his royal association made it through the Revolution. Eventually he was sent by the State to America once again, with a view to finding species suitable for introduction to the European climate. Following this tour he commenced the present work, his magnum opus. It far surpassed the previous treatments of American trees, and employed the luminaries of botanical illustration (the Redouté brothers, Bessa and Riché) for the production of the plates. Stipple-engraved à la poupée, the plates were inked with several colors applied with small cotton pads (shaped like a doll or "poupée" in French) for each impression. The process is intensively laborious and proved too expensive to continue for long into the XIXc. Catharine Yeates (1783-1866) was a wealthy heiress in Lancaster, PA, who built on her father's property holdings and became a grandee of the city. Her interest in the set doubtless lay in its information and illustration of the trees that grew on her estate -- to say nothing of the local pride in its author as a member of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, just sixty miles east. Her calligraphic signature to each volume is a proud statement of erudition and wealth. Yeates doubtless left the set to her sister Elizabeth (1778-1867), who married Redmond Conyngham (1781-1846). The bookplate may be that of the late Conyngham's (used by his wife) or that of their son Redmond (1816-1874). The Conyngham (a variant of Cunningham) family of Lancaster hailed from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal in Ireland, and had been prominent in Pennsylvania commerce government since the 1740's. Considerably after the ownership by these two distinguished Pennsylvania families, the book came into the collection of Louis St. Lewis (1961-2021), a North Carolina-born queer pop artist admired by Andy Warhol. His work was principally assemblages (collage); could the remaining plate volumes have been cut up and used for his work (as he did with Audubon's birds)? Worn generally. Foxed, with some passages of damp-staining and offsetting. A handful of plates tanned. A wholly unsophisticated set of the first 5 volumes of an eventual 7 (although Stafleu-Cowan accedes to the uncertainty of the issue of the work). Henri-Louis Duhamel de Monceau (1700-1782) published a Traité des arbres et arbustes in 1755, and that work does indeed provide a scaffold for the present set, but the association of the name of the great botanist-doctor is largely an homage. Under the impetus of Etienne Marcel (as editor for the whole work?) and others, including Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel and Jean-Louis-Auguste Loiseleur-Deslongschamps, an essentially new publication under the same title was published from 1800. Often called the "nouveau Duhamel" (whence the "Second Édition" of the title) the Traité updates the survey of trees and shrubs cultivated in France, illustrated afresh with plates after Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) -- the "Raphael of flowers" -- and his pupil Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846). Redouté's contributions were only to voll. I-V. Of particular note is the coloring of the plates at the press à la poupée -- i.e., such that the individual colors of ink are applied directly to the plate using a small cloth bundle (a "poupée" is a rag-doll; modern practitioners use cotton ear-swabs) -- that Redouté had learned from Bartolozzi during his time in London with L'Héritier de Brutelle making the Sertum Anglicum. The set was sold at Christie's New York (3 May 1978, lot 315), likely to Richard Harris, who bought widely in the UK and the Netherlands throughout the 1970's and 1980's. His central collection was of fine examples of natural history plate books, though his tastes were wide enough that his library was sold at Bloomsbury New York (16 October 2010, the present set lot 30) and then at Bloomsbury London (19 November 2010). Arriving in New York in May, he spent the next three years studying and classifying trees in the northeastern United States, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. In 1807 he met Robert Fulton and became such a good friend that he was one of two passengers on the Clermont 's landmark trip up the Hudson River. After returning to France, he wrote a three-volume work called The North American Sylva; or, A Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia. It was published in Paris from 1810 to 1813 and translated into English five years later. Michaux spent most of the rest of his life managing experimental farms owned by the Société Centrale de l'Agriculture near Paris, devoting much of his work to the cultivation and propagation of trees and shrubs grown from seeds he had sent back from America.".
