Below the stamp is a note in blue ink written by Teale's widow, Nellie Imogene Donovan, that reads "Presented to Ann Haymond Zwinger - 1-26-1987 from her friend Nellie Teale". Edwin Way Teale died in 1980 while working with author Ann Zwinger on the book A Conscious Stillness: Two Naturalists on Thoreau's Rivers. Teale's portion of the book was nearly complete at the time of his death, and he was included as co-author (with Ann Zwinger) when the book was published in 1982.
