Just as a prism separates white light into its component bands of colored light, so the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is used to separate a signal into its constituent frequencies. Just as a pair of sunglasses reduces the glare of white light, permitting only the softer green light to pass, so the DFT may be used to modify a signal to achieve a desired effect. In fact, by analyzing the component frequencies of a signal or any system, the DFT can be used in an astonishing variety of problems. Among the applications of the DFT are digital signal processing, oil and gas exploration, medical imaging, aircraft and spacecraft guidance, and the solution of differential equations of physics and engineering. This book explores both the practical and theoretical aspects of the DFT, one of the most widely used tools in science, engineering, and computational mathematics. Designed to be accessible to an audience with diverse interests and mathematical backgrounds, the book is written in an informal style and is supported by many examples, figures, and problems.Conceived as an ""owner's"" manual, this comprehensive book covers such topics as the history of the DFT, derivations and properties of the DFT, comprehensive error analysis, issues concerning the implementation of the DFT in one and several dimensions, symmetric DFTs, a sample of DFT applications, and an overview of the FFT.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is an American federal research facility in Livermore, California, United States, founded by the University of California in 1952. A Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), it is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed and operated by Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS), a partnership of the University of California, Bechtel, BWX Technologies, AECOM, and Battelle Memorial Institute in affiliation with the Texas A&M University System. In 2012, the laboratory had the synthetic chemical element livermorium named after it. LLNL was established in 1952 as the University of California Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, an offshoot of the UC Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley. It was intended to provide competition to the Los Alamos nuclear weapon design laboratory, home of the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic weapons. Edward Teller and Ernest Lawrence, director of the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, are regarded as the co-founders of the Livermore facility. Lawrence tapped 32-year-old Herbert York, a former graduate student of his, to run Livermore. Under York, the Lab had four main programs: Project Sherwood (the Magnetic Fusion Program), Project Whitney (the weapons design program), diagnostic weapon experiments (both for the Los Alamos and Livermore laboratories), and a basic physics program. In 1957, the Livermore Lab was selected to develop the warhead for the Navy's Polaris missile. To sustain existing warheads for the indefinite future, a science-based Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) was defined that emphasized the development and application of greatly improved technical capabilities to assess the safety, security, and reliability of existing nuclear warheads without the use of nuclear testing. Confidence in the performance of weapons is maintained through an ongoing process of stockpile surveillance, assessment and certification, and refurbishment or weapon replacement.

The LLNL website states: "Computing: it's in our DNA. Since 1952, when LLNL was created, Computation has been essential to R&D, science and technology, and operations. What do we do? Amazing computing in the interest of our nation. We're making the world safer by shaping the frontiers of HPC, data sciences, and computer science. Our programs are meeting our mission to sustain leading-edge discipline research, develop and maintain strong partnerships, and deliver creative technologies and software solutions. We design, develop, and deploy HPC capabilities not only in support of Livermore's mission and program goals, such as the nation's Stockpile Stewardship Program, but to improve national security and advance U.S. economic competitiveness. We partner with industry, foreign governments, and nontraditional government sponsors to drive technology advancements, speed development of new applications, and help cultivate other collaborations. HPC powers scientific discovery.".
