Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Special Edition. By Craig Rice, pseudonym of Georgiana Ann Randolph Craig. Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, A Tower Mystery, (1942). First Tower Books edition, first printing "Tower Books Edition, first printing September 1942" statement to th…e copyright page. Originally published by Simon & Schuster in 1941, this Tower Mystery edition has new and exclusive jacket art by the collaborating artist team know as Adler & Lubalin. The fifth, (and a fan favorite) of thirteen mysteries featuring investigating lawyer and tough private detective, John J. Malone with side-kick rich couple sleuthing helpers Jake Justus and Helene Brand, is set in rural Wisconsin. This title earned a place in the prestigious Haycraft & Queen Cornerstone selection. The series was adapted to a 1951-52 thirteen episode television series 'The Amazing Mr. Malone' starring Lee Tracy. Also adapted to numerous radio plays, and based on the character for the 1950 film 'Mrs. O'Malley and Mr. Malone' starring James Whitmore and Marjorie Main. A decently presentable vintage collectible. Mystery novelist and mystery script and screenwriter's stamped name and book-plate to the front end-paper, age-toning to the inner hinge areas as usual, very light foxing to the outer page fore-edges, slight fading to the upper spine end, rubs to the upper spine edge, else very good, square and quite firm in blue linen with black Mystery bat insignia to the front cover and with black titles to the spine, upper page edges blue; in a good only, dust jacket with mystery art by the artist team of Samuel Adler & Herb Lubalin, a piece of amber tape reinforcing to the upper front panel and lower spine end, rub-wear to the spine folds, heavy chipping to the upper spine end area, a small chip, nicks and very short tears to the shelf-edges; original printed code 409 still intact to the front inner flap. The dust jacket will be placed in a clear removable, protective sleeve after scanning for this entry. Samuel Adler, Herb Lubalin (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Poor. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [heavily worn, fraying to cloth at spine extremities, hinges a little loosey-goosey, soiling to covers, etc; bookplate of Donn Byrne on front pastedown]. (line drawings) A rare early work by this Romanian-born author, who began his literary career as a journalist in Mo…ntreal and later New York in the 1910s, whose stories often focused on immigrant and impoverished communities. (Upon first coming to New York, he lived the life himself, dwelling on the Lower East Side, working in sweatshops, etc.). His first book, "Crimes of Charity" (1917), was an expose of shady practices engaged in by various private charities in the city; this one, his second, collected two dozen of his stories (some of which had appeared in the New York World), and represents his earliest forays into fiction. He was a prolific writer of short stories throughout the 1920s and into the mid-1930s, and became best known for his fictional and non-fictional chronicling of Roma (Gypsy) life and culture. (His 1941 autobiography is entitled "It's the Gypsy in Me.") During the 1920s he ran with the New York literary crowd -- a connection that's somewhat documented by the presence in this very beat-up book of the Ex Libris bookplate of the Irish author Donn Byrne (1889-1928), who lived in New York during the 1910s and early 1920s. One of the book's four illustrations is by Herb Roth (which actually might be reprinted from the New York World, to which both he and Bercovici contributed). ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." You can access this catalog and its contents in any one of three ways: (1) email us to request a PDF to be emailed to you; (2) view or download the catalog from the link on our website's main page; (3) browse the books individually (including a few that didn't make the cut for the catalog) on our website under these two subject headings: "Immigration: Fiction" and "Immigration: Non-fiction.". Illustrated by Samuel Cohan(?), Herb Roth, "Ross" (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good- dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [a good solid copy, with minor shelfwear and light soiling to bottom edges; the Adler & Lubalin-designed jacket is bright and attractive despite numerous tiny edge-nicks (although with only minimal paper loss)]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in the upper left… corner of the front endpaper: "9/12/40 / For Rose Wainess / Jerome Weidman." A chronicle of the author's trip around the world, undertaken from April to October of 1939 because he "wished to see the world before its face was completely changed. He set out just in time to see the last months of the great European democracies. He had no preconceived plan to write a travel book, but as he moved from country to country he felt it important to make notes of the undercurrents of impending excitement. [His book] is not a political survey, nor is it a Baedeker-like report of Things Seen and Places Visited. It is the travel book of a distinguished young American novelist who has a sense of humor and is aware of the little and great things that go on about him." He spent quite a bit of time in England (Plymouth and London, with a side trip to Edinburgh) and France (Paris, Marseilles, Juan-les-Pins) -- between one-third and one-half of the book -- before continuing across the Meditteranean to Egypt and points east (Arabia, India, Ceylon, Java, Australia, etc.), winding up at last in Honolulu. There is no indication that he even thought about going anywhere near Nazi Germany (or even Italy, for that matter) -- for a Jewish novelist, probably not a bad decision. Signed by Author. Illustrated by (dj) [Samuel] Adler & [Herb] Lubalin (illustratore).
