CONDENSED AND TRANSLATED, WITH OBSERVATIONS EXTRACTED FROM THE WRITINGS OF THE MOST DISTINGUISHED MEDICAL AUTHORS: BY D. SPILLAN, M.D. . . . CONTAINING DISEASES OF THE ENCEPHALON, WITH EXTRACTS FROM OLLIVIER'S WORK ON DISEASES OF THE SPINAL CORD AND ITS MEMBANES. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1838. Bound with AN ESSAY ON DEW, AND SEVERAL APPEARANCES CONNECTED WITH IT. BY WILLIAM CHARLES WELLS, M.D. Philadelphia: Haswell, Barrington, and Haswell, 1838. Paged as 1-299, [1], 1-71. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 14cm. Original quarter leather binding; spine leather dried and darkened with chips at ends and at upper front joint; two worn black labels present but without discernable lettering; marbled paper boards; front board lacking surface leather at its fore-edge corners but with leather still present at rear board corners; some toning and staining to boards as well. Mild bowing to book. Bound without pastedowns with marbled paper just overlapping at the edges and full cardstock exposed. Personal library bookplate of S.F. Hill (Civil War-era Carrollton, Alabama surgeon Dr. Samuel F. Hill) dated for 1860 on front board's verso. Slender horizontal swath of paper removed from front free endpaper; pages 7-8 slightly pulled; moisture staining to early leaves; foxing throughout. Binding is still firm. A Hill family history asserts that Dr. Samuel Felto Hill (1813-1895) was a Confederate Army surgeon but cursory research disproves that claim. It is possible that Hill temporarily participated with a militia unit but the most plausible scenario is that he simply treated ill and injured soldiers as Carrollton was in proximity to Alabama civil war activity in Tuscaloosa and Greensboro as well as being reasonably close to the hospital town of Columbus, Mississippi where thousands of Union and Confederate wounded were transported after the Battle of Shiloh.…

Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Good. B/w chart with some hand colouring, printed on heavy paper 72x121cm. Very good with short closed tear to edge, soiled to the blank verso. First edition published on 15 Aug 1927, with small corrections up to 1930. The main map, natural scale 1/30,000, shows Jeddah's position along the coast, which is covered from Ruba t'Ashara in the north to the "low featureless" country south of Jezirat Ghorab to the south, and the complexities of the approach to it by sea. Both this and the large Inner Anchorage inset map, 1/12,500, show the town of Jeddah itself as it would have appeared at the start of Ibn Saud's reign, with a remarkable degree of detail. This includes the old city wall with its gates marked, among which the Medina, Mecca and Cherif Gates are named on the landward sides, and the Main and Small Gates on the coastal side. Major buildings labelled include several Consulates (Persian, Egyptian, British, French, Russian, Austrian, Dutch); the Governor's House; Customs House; Landing; Quarantine; Barracks; Police Station; Post Office; Telephone Office; Prison; and the Minarets of various mosques (Senussi, Mahmud, Hanafe, and Pacha). Also labelled is Holt's Agency (Alfred Holt & Co, aka Blue Funnel or Ocean Steam Ship), which ran a lucrative business transporting Malay and Indonesian pilgrims. Outside of the city walls north of the Medina Gate are Eve's Tomb or Ummina Hawwa with a small diagram showing its configuration, the tomb of Marabout Sheikh Fadah, a cemetery, and the old Ottoman barracks (Kishla). Outside the walls to the south are the tomb of Marabout Shiekh Bulyon, a Government mill, and the Christian burial ground.…
