Steinach fue un fisiólogo, investigador de la hormona se convirtió en el Director del Instituto de Biología de Viena, de la Academia de Ciencias en 1912, el año en que se llevó a cabo experimentos en el trasplante de un varón de conejillo de indias testículos a una mujer y la castración del varón. La secreción de los testículos, ahora conocida como la testosterona , dio lugar a la cobaya hembra a desarrollar el comportamiento sexual masculino, como el montaje de la pareja.
