Female instrumentalists technique, repertoire, training, professional opportunities and travel were also subjects of lively discussion in the 19th century. This collection of sources allows us to trace the many-sided and very contradictory arguments. It includes 167 German, English and French texts from musical magazines, daily newspapers, monographs and collections of essays. As well as the basic arguments, themes include the piano, strings, harp and guitar, organ, wind instruments, and the gradual development of womens orchestras - a logical consequence of the fact that women (with the exception of a few harpists) were still excluded from other orchestras.
