Heinrich Holtzinger stellt den zahlreichen kunsthistorischen Betrachtungen zur Architekturgeschichte seine systematische Betrachtung an die Seite. Historisch grenzt er seinen Forschungsgegenstand auf den Zeitraum zwischen 300 und 800 n. Chr. ein. Noch heute ist es faszinierend zu lesen, wie es Holtzinger gelingt, aus den Anforderungen des Gottesdienstes die Funktionen der Gebäudeteile abzuleiten und daraus die architektonische Gestalt der Bauten selbst zu interpretieren. Vom ersten Moment an, da die gottesdienstliche Handlung aus dem Privatraum heraustrat und nach besonderen Gebäuden verlangte, aus denen sich das Langhaus entwickelte, das schließlich zur Basilika wurde, folgt die Form dem liturgischen Inhalt. Viele spezielle Formprobleme - beispielsweise das Atrium, die Apsis, die Türgestaltungen oder die Lösung des Lichtproblems in der Basilika - erklärt Holtzinger aus den Bedürfnissen der liturgischen Handlungen. Überzeugend wie der Text sind auch die zahlreichen Abbildungen: Viel mehr, als moderne Fotografien es könnten, vermitteln die Architekturzeichnungen und Risse das Wesen von Struktur und Gestalt der frühchristlichen Architektur. Das macht Holtzingers Buch nicht nur zu einem Standardwerk systematischer Architekturbeschreibung, sondern auch zu einem bibliophilen Ereignis für heutige Leser. 304 pp. Deutsch.
