Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. x+234 pages with diagrams. Octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. A reasonable book on the chess endgames, with some significant amount of time looking at the quite common variety of king and pawn endings. An older book, it uses old-style notation, so if you don't want to read that, get a more modern version. Following on from early work this is a reasonable piece of chess writing. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, hinges rubbed, previous owner's name in pencil to half title else very good.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. x+166 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8" x 5") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published by David McKay in 1953. Modern Ideas was published in 1953 so the term "modern" is somewhat relative in this case. I'm not sure from when the term originated, but these days it really just describes a particular era in chess history rather than a proclamation of anything new to the chess world. An interesting part of this book is what Horowitz refers to as "chess movies." These are chess games that are narrated both in text and images with the snapshots of the board displaying positions after every few moves of the players. This is quite useful and very effective. The reader needs to visualize only a few moves between each snapshot, so it's a fairly simple act to follow along without having to resort to a board or computer program. As a side benefit, even if you are playing along with a board and chess set, life is made a bit easier by way of the "movie frames" as you can quickly be sure that you haven't made any errors at the board and easily correct any mistakes that you do make. Condition: Wrappers, with heavy edge wear, corners chipped, some indentations to wrappers, closed tears to head hinge, lightly soiled else about very good.

What is it in the nature of this unique game that has appealed to so many people for so many centuries? What does this game mean for those who play in, and why does it interest even those who do not? Here are the answers in brilliant book that explains chess as a social, psychological, historical and dramatic phenomenon. Filled with unexpected humor and written in a language anyone can understand, The Personality of chess offers a vast amount of little known facts about the game, some in refutation of popular misconceptions, others boldly treading unexplored areas. Is there a correlation between skill in chess and general intelligence? Does skill in chess reflect proficiency in other fields? Are masters of the game like other men - or do they possess other special mental and emotional kinks? What accounts for the durability of the game? Chess players will find many hitherto unrelated areas fully explored, along with further information on aspects of the game that have received only cursory attention up until now. The general reading will find an entertaining, highly readable profile of one of the most extra ordinary games ever invented by man." ; some wear, else G. Book.

Quarto (11 1/4" x 8 3/4") Volume 16, bound in original publisher's red cloth with silver lettering to spine. (Betts: 7-76) First edition. The Chess Review is a U.S. chess magazine that was published from January 1933 until October 1969 (Volume 37 Number 10). Until April 1941 it was called The Chess Review. Published in New York, it began on a schedule of at least ten issues a year but later became a monthly. Isaac Kashdan was the editor for the first year, with Al Horowitz and Fred Reinfeld as associate editors. After one year, Kashdan left and Horowitz became editor, a position he retained for the remainder of the magazine's existence. Chess Review was virtually unchallenged as the premier U.S. chess periodical from its start in 1933 until a rival emerged in 1961 after a major revamp of the official United States Chess Federation magazine, Chess Life. The two magazines remained in competition until November 1969, when Horowitz retired and the magazines were merged to become Chess Life & Review. The cover of the first issue featured a chess problem composed by Otto Wurzburg (1875 1951), a Grand Rapids, Michigan, postal worker. Kashdan was one of the world's premier problem solvers of the 1920s and 1930s. His interest in compositions influenced the magazine for years after he left, and the cover would feature a chess problem every issue until May 1941. Wurzburg served as problem editor and contributed a monthly column. The magazine staff also included art director Bertram Kadish who contributed cartoons and illustrations. An unusual feature of the first issue was a bridge column written by George Reith. Horowitz and Reinfeld were contract bridge devotees, but the column was dropped after three issues. Condition: Corners and spine ends lightly rubbed, some dampening to head pages of first number. About very good copy lacking jacket.
