Vol. 2 includes portraits of more than 250 "breeders, stud owners, and others interested in the breeding of horses" (several women among them). There has never been anything like this massive set, which describes the histories and contemporary breeders of Arabian and other Eastern horses, Thoroughbreds, hunters, trotters, Hackneys and other harness horses, polo ponies, native ponies (Welsh, mountain, moorland, Exmoor, Shetland), Clydesdale, Shire, Suffolk, and colonial horses (South African, Australasian, West Indian, and Canadian). Various experts wrote the chapters, including Walter Gilbey, J.C. Ewart, W. Scarth Dixon, T.F. Dale, Vero Shaw, Herman Biddell, and others.
