Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. 1. A call to a Brahmin. 2. A call to a Sufi. 3. The utarids of Lahore. 4. A catholic family. 5. Juvescence of the year. 6. A narrow entrance of the world. 7. 'England-returned'. 8. Guardians of what? 9. Brown sahib and reddish mole. 10. Midnight of freedom. 11. Discovering New Delhi. 12. The Shastri-Kamaraj axis. 13. The legacy of the little sparrow. Index. Far more than simply autobiographical, these selections from the memoirs of a former ICS officer offer a fascinating cultural and social history of the subcontinent, notably of the Indian-Christian community of the Punjab in the first half of the twentieth century. They explore the conditions in which converts were made and how they engaged with the broader culture. They delineate the entanglements between the ideas and imaginings of a crudely Westernized lower middle class and the culture of the colonizers. They recount how, as a young District Officer, the author confronted both the cultural challenges of rural postings in the extreme south and the implications of being a fledgling Guardian and how, in New Delhi later on, he experienced the bloodletting of August 1947. He questions the myths, action models and growing corruption of the new Indian ruling class of which he was himself a part as he rose to the higher ranks of the central and state bureaucracy. The book's concluding chapters capture the political manoeuvrings of the last Nehru years as well as the prime ministerial life and times of his still undervalued successor, Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. India's Indigenous Medical Systems: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach brings together in one volume, essays by historians, botanists and physicians of indigenous as well as Western medicine to show how Indian medicine evolved, constantly adapting itself to the challenges posed by Western medical science. Among other things, this volume also highlights the development of medicine and public health under the patronage of Jahangir; the efficacy of Ayurveda in combating epidemics and fatal diseases; the introduction of vaccination in colonial Bengal and the social resistance to it; the rich heritage of folk and tribal medicine among the tribes of Birbhum; use of traditional herbs which have now become patent drugs for curing serious ailments like jaundice; and the development of organized documentation of ethno-botanical medicine in India. Several essays bring out how there was continuous conflict as well as collaboration between Ayurveda, Unani and Western medicine, and how each system learnt from the other. They also contend, however, that the lack of an understanding of the human anatomy and surgery, and a disregard for scientific research have thwarted the advancement of indigenous medical systems in India.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Using observational data from Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE), Canberra, Australia, this book explores the differences in police officer patterns of conference management. Restorative Justice conference facilitators¿ sex, age, directiveness, and preparation time for the conference are used as independent variables to study their possible impact on the duration of conference, number of offender and victim supporters present, the percentage of conference time facilitators and offenders spoke, amount of reintegrative shame expressed, and the outcomes reached. Results indicate that directivenss of the facilitators and their preparation time have consistent association with most important conference variables of duration, percent time offenders spoke, percent time facilitators spoke and the outcomes reached. Preparation ensures better results over all, whereas directivenss of the facilitators leads to violation of procedural fairness. The findings have numerous implications for research and practice especially in the field of facilitator selection, training and development, and their performance appraisal.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 96 pp. Englisch.
