Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. Illustrated by J. Allen St. John (illustratore). 3rd Edition. Two ex-rental-library G&D Tarzan reprints from the 1920s -- one retaining most of its original dust jacket -- for one price. "Lord of the Jungle" is Zeuschner 684, retaining the 1928 McClurg copyright page but actually G&D 1929, with four glossy internals (including the frontispiece) by J. Allen St. John. FFE bears the rubber stamps of two Los Angeles-area rental libraries (or one that changed its name & address), but there are NO other lending-library stampings, attachments, or removed attachments. Front and back panels and both flaps of dust jacket all present though tattered, jacket might otherwise grade "good," but we reduce grade of jacket on "Lord of the Jungle" to "poor" since the dust jacket spine is entirely missing. (Jacket now in a Brodart protector, which at least holds it together.) African jungle fantasy, filmed many times, most notably with German-American Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller. "Golden Lion," on the other hand, is Zeuschner 583, the first Grosset & Dunlap printing (1924) identified by the fact most of the illustrations appear at the wrong page numbers (caused by picking up the list of illustrations directly from the earlier McClurg edition -- list corrected in later G&D printings.) Black titles to orange boards; spine slanted 3/8ths inch; NO dust jacket on this second offering. FFE of "Golden Lion" stamped "Montrose Rental Library / 2245 Honolulu Avenue," but there are NO other lending library stampings, crossouts, or attachments. All eight glossy B&W plates (including frontispiece) firmly tipped in, although "The Golden Lion with two mighty bounds was upon the high priest" (at pg. 256) shows a noticeable white diagonal scratch. 377 and 333 pp., respectively. The pair of early G&D Tarzan reprints now reduced from $44.

"By 1927 a chance meeting with one of his college professors, John Gallishaw, encouraged him to try writing. He attended Gallishaw's course in short fiction on the condition that he pay for the course out of future sales. He married socialite Dorothy L. MacReady in New York City during November of that year. [9] By May 1928 he had his first story published. He enjoyed immediate success selling to the pulp magazines, and sold 18 stories before his first rejection. The magazines paid well at that time, and he was soon able to build a comfortable home outside of Baltimore, Maryland. In 1930, he published his first novel, The Seeds Of Murder, which introduced Captain Hugh North, an agent of U. S. Army Intelligence. North was the hero in a long series of "intrigue" novels. By 1931, he had settled into a career as an author of novels as well as short fiction, publishing his first historical novel in book form, Captain Nemesis, which was republished from an earlier pulp serial. The historical novel apparently did not sell well, because he resumed the mystery/intrigue genre, publishing a dozen or so volumes during the next seven years, including nine more about Hugh North. " (from Wikipedia).
