Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Limited Edition. Quarto, 161pp., illustrated by Millard Sheets. Very near fine in the publisher's decorative green cloth with dark green leather spine. In the publisher's slipcase; near fine, with slightl fading to extremities. One of 1500 limited copies SIGNED by Sheets on the limitation page. The c…ontroversial title was problematic even in the 19th century, as the book was first published in the United States under a different title ("The Children of the Sea"). The story itself is far more nuanced than its nasty original title suggests; the protagonist, a West Indian sailor named James Wait, is ill at sea, and as condition worsens, the Black and white sailors argue and fight over the truth of his condition, and how to handle it. Themes of isolation and the fraying of societal bonds, along with deeper themes of colonialism and racism make the story well worth reading and preserving, despite its ill-chosen title.
