A particularly attractive First Edition, First Printing of the posthumously published sequel to Silverstein's Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook (2005). The copyright page explicitly states "FIRST EDITION," and the complete number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 establishes this copy as the first printing. Published September 19, 2017, the book gathers 41 previously unpublished poems and accompanying drawings featuring Runny Babbit and his woodland companions, all built around Silverstein's characteristic spoonerisms and playful reversals of sounds. The material was assembled from completed but unpublished works preserved in the Silverstein Archive, rather than newly created or completed by another writer after Silverstein's death in 1999. HarperCollins worked with members of Silverstein's family in selecting the archival material for publication. Condition: Fine book in Near Fine dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is exceptionally fresh and square, with bright silver-stamped Silverstein facsimile signature and rabbit vignette to the front board and bright silver spine lettering. Binding tight and secure; pages clean and crisp with no observed ownership markings, tears, or wear. The original white pictorial dust jacket retains the US/CAN printed price and "A NEW BOOK" blue sticker and presents very well, with only minor handling/edge wear consistent with the Near Fine grade. An especially clean example of the true first printing. Publishers Weekly reported that Silverstein's family worked with Harper editor Antonia Markiet for roughly a year and a half, selecting poems and drawings from preliminary Runny Babbit material that Silverstein himself had created but omitted from the original collection. Thus the 2017 First Edition represents the first appearance in book form of authentic Silverstein literary and artistic material, published eighteen years after his death. The physical design also deliberately preserves Silverstein's unmistakable visual identity: his sparse black-line illustrations, wandering baseline motif, playful typography, and the large silver facsimile signature and rabbit illustration stamped directly onto the blue cloth make the book quite attractive even without its jacket. The copyright page additionally credits Rachel Zegar with the book design. Editorial Reviews : To say that this particular apple tree is a 'giving tree' is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said 'M.E. + T.' 'And then the tree was happy. but not really.' When there's nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. "And the tree was happy." While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take? Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation.
