Two Autograph Letters Signed (both 'Lee of Fareham') from Arthur Hamilton Lee, Viscount Lee of Fareham, to Morley Stuart, editor of the Cambridge Daily News, with reference to his 'old friend' the Marquess of Willingdon.

Both items 2pp., 12mo. Both in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight evidence of previous mounting. The first letter (addressed to 'The Editor | Cambridge Daily News') begins: 'When I received my L.L.D Degree from the University (in June 1931) you published in your issue of June 6, some photographs of the procession… to the Senate House on that occasion.' He is writing 'on the off chance' that 'original prints' survive, 'as I am most anxious to obtain one, for my Autobiography, if it is in any way possible to do so'. In the second letter (to 'Mr. Stuart') he thanks the editor for the trouble he has taken: 'The photograph is excellent and exactly what I wanted.' He is also 'much amused' by Stuart's 'reminiscence of the Hastings Election (1906, I assume), but shocked to learn (what I had entirely forgotten) that I could ever have spoken against my old friend Freeman Willingdon!' (Fareham was a Conservative, and Willingdon a Liberal.) He recalls that he has stayed with Willingdon 'in India & elsewhere so often since; and was his Sponsor when he took his seat as a "Viscount", in the House of Lords; some 15 years ago.' To prove that there is 'no permanent breach', he is sending a photograph taken when Willingdon 'gave away the Prizes at Cheltenham College - of which I was President'.
Typed Letter Signed ('Mountbatten of Burma') from Lord Mountbatten [Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma] to Mr
Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979), 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma [Lord Mountbatten], last Viceroy of India (1947), uncle of Duke of Edinburgh [Brian North Lee (1936-2007), bookplate historian; ex libris]

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, laid down on backing and a little creased. He thanks him for a letter about 'the study you are doing of Royal bookplates, and of course I remember the icon you had had [sic] of my great aunt Ella and was so pleased to have the postcard of it you kindly sent me'. He is also pleased to learn that Lee…has been able to identify the print which his father sent Lee of his bookplate as the work of George Taylor Friend, 'which I am sure he would have been very pleased to know'. Lee's research 'must produced quite a few headaches, but with very interesting results'. He is sending 'a print of my bookplate which my father had designed for me, but perhaps not by George Taylor Friend'.

Very good. Wear along centerfold, especially at top. Size 29 x 19.5 Inches. A beautiful c. 1947 Alf Cooke pictorial map of India, produced on the eve of independence and partition. It highlights the goods produced by the Raj and posits a bright future for the subcontinent. A Closer Look The map reflects the vast diversity of the… Indian subcontinent through its economic output, ranging from raw minerals and petroleum, to staples like wheat, millet, and rice, to commodities like cotton, tea, and sugar. Heavier industries, such as shipbuilding and steel works, point to the country's hoped-for economic future. Illustrations represent these economic activities, while text labels some of the provinces, princely states, and geographic regions. An intricate border with a flower motif surrounds the map. India in War and Peace As referred to in the text at bottom-right, though World War II (1939 - 1945) was a tumultuous period in India, with civil disobedience against British imperial rule, religious strife, and a horrific famine in Bengal, the need for war materiel was beneficial to India's economy and finances. However, the traumatic experience of 1947 partition and its aftermath damaged economic prospects, at least temporarily. Under the administration of Jawaharlal Nehru (1952 - 1964), India followed a socialist modernization model inspired by the Soviet Union, which did result in some expansion of heavy industry as well as the construction of roads, dams, canals, and railways. Publication History and Census This map was printed by Alf Cooke around the year 1947 and was distributed by British Information Services, a propaganda outfit in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office established in 1941 to promote British interests in the United States, which explains its New York City location noted here. There are two editions of the map: one held by the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection dates to c. 1943 and the text box at bottom is titled 'India in War and Peace,' while the present edition dates to c. 1947, with the box title as 'India's Economic Future.' Regardless of edition, it is scarce to the market and is only listed among the institutional holdings of the British Library, the Library of Congress, the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
