Trade Paperback. Condizione: Near Fine. Seventh Printing. 234 Pages Indexed. First published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1936 this is the Seventh Printing of the 1962 Oklahoma Press Paperback Edition. No defects noted to this As New book with flawless interior text pages. Born during the American Revolution, Williams was a child of the early frontier. In his young manhood he became an itinerant preacher and appointed himself a missionary to the Osages, who soon converted him to their ways. The Osage girl he married died after bearing his two daughters. From this point on, Old Bill forsook civilization and made the wilderness his home. He was a master trapper and so identified himself in signing his name. He was one of the guides of the Sibley survey of the Santa Fe Trail in 1825 and some twenty years later was a guide with two different Fremont expeditions. The research on Williams' background and early adult life was superb and the author keeps the historical perspective as he moves through the trapper's life. Favour was a lawyer who came to Arizona in 1917 and except for a monograph on Arizona state laws this is the only book that he published. Brandon's introduction makes clear that Favour's research is still as valid as ever. The watercolor painting on the cover is a field sketch called Mountain Man Preparing Supper by Alfred Miller. Contents in 16 Chapters: Mountain Men, A North Carolina Family, Early Life in Missouri, Preacher and Missionary, With the Osage Indians, Changes in the Indian Trade, The First Santa Fe Survey, As a Mountain Man, Bill Williams Master Trapper, Piracy on Land, Passing of the Fur Trade, Fur Trading with the Indians, Trapping and Indian Fighting, The Fremont Expedition of 1848, Failure Retreat and Starvation, and The End and Vindication. Illustrated throughout with photos, drawings, copies of documents, and two maps.
