Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. The Eclogues, ten short pastoral poems, were composed between approximately 42 and 39 BC, during the time of the 'Second' Triumvirate of Lepidus, Anthony, and Octavian. In them Virgil subtly blended an idealized Arcadia with contemporary history. To his Greek model - the Idylls ofTheocritus - he added a strong element of Italian realism: places and people, real or disguised, and contemporary events are introduced. The Eclogues display all Virgil's art and charm and are among his most delightful achievements.Between approximately 39 and 29 BC, years of civil strife between Antony, and Octavian, Virgil was engaged upon the Georgics. Part agricultural manual, full of observations of animals and nature, they deal with the farmer's life and give it powerful allegorical meaning. These four books containsome of Virgil's finest descriptive writing and are generally held to be his greatest and most entertaining work, and C. Day Lewis's lyrical translations are classics in their own right. Good condition. Some light tanning on page edges. {"length"=>["18"], "width"=>["12"], "units"=>["Centimeters"]}.

'Modern love' was originally published in1862. In 1892 Meredith published a new and slightly revised edition, from which the text of this edition is taken. This edition has the benefit of a twenty page introduction by the poet C. Day Lewis. Modern Love by George Meredith is a sequence of fifty 16-line sonnets about the failure of a marriage, an episodic verse narrative that has been described as "a novella in verse". Earlier working titles for the sequence were "The Love-Match" and then "The Tragedy of Modern Love".[2] It first appeared in 1862 as part of the volume Modern Love and Poems of the English Roadside, published by Chapman & Hall, and then thirty years later, with slight modifications, from Macmillan. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First Edition. First impression of the first edition of the definitive edition, based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Library. With a 19pp introduction by Cecil Day Lewis and a long memoir in the Appendix at the back of the book by Edmund Blunden. ***Near fine in mustard-yellow cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on a red gilt-bordered oval to the spine. The boards are beautifully clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. No tears to the cloth. No reading creases and no reading lean to the spine. Page block edges nice and clean. Internally also near fine with nom ownership inscriptions. No creases or tears. Pages clean with no annotations and no foxing. ***In a near fine printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The dustwrapper is in unusually near fine condition, with no significant faults - just some light rubbing to the extremities, and a couple of small marks on the spine. No creases, chips or tears. Additionally, the red title on the spine of the dustwrapper remain unfaded. Dustwrapper clean and bright. ***224mm x144mm. x prelim-pages plus 191 pages including appendices - four facsimile handwritten drafts, including final draft of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' and index of first lines to rear. ***Wilfred Owen's death in the First World War was an irreparable loss to English poetry. His war poems have kept their originality and force through the last forty years: the best of them were unequalled by any of that remarkable band of fellow-poets who fought on the Western Front, and they promised still greater things to come. ***This definitive edition of Owen's poetry, which is based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Museum and elsewhere, contains a selection of the poet's juvenilia and several other unpublished poems, as well as all those which have appeared in the previous editions edited by Siegfried Sassoon and Edmund Blunden. The editor supplies an "apparatus criticus", giving variants made by Owen himself, and indicating where his text differs from that of the previous editors. He has also contributed a long Introduction, in which he discusses Owen's poetry and early life, making use of the poet's unpublished letters to his family. Edmund Blunden's Memoir, dealing with the war period, is reprinted as an appendix, and there are reproductions of four drafts of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first impression of the first edition of the definitive edition, based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Library, complete in its original dustwrapper in unusually near fine condition. Of interest to literary academics and collectors of the poetry of Wilfred Owen and of First World War literature and poetry titles. Although the book is not rare, it was rapidly reprinted, and examples of the first impression in this near fine condition are very hard to find now. A collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

paperback/wraps. First edition of this selection. This otherwise humble Penguin Books paperback is rendered noteworthy by featuring the poet's signature "Robert Frost" at the center of the title page. "This collection of poems, though a common trade edition in modest commercial format, is of consequence in that it is a truly 'selected' volume distinct from cheap reprint texts. RF made this selection of 185 of his published poems." Anglo-Irish poet and future Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-1972) contributed an introduction. Condition of this copy is very good, the wraps binding square and tight with no vertical spine creasing and very little soiling, though with light wear to joints and extremities, and minor fraying to the spine ends. The contents are inevitably age-toned, with light spotting confined to the page edges. A gift inscription is inked in four lines to the lower half title: "Brenda | Memento - Dartington Aug 1-6, 1955 | C. D. T | 12-8-55".Fittingly, given this selection of his poetry published in England and introduced by a future British Poet Laureate, iconic American poet Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) was first published in England. There he completed the manuscript of A Boy's Will, where it was published by David Nutt in 1913. In 1955, 42 years after he was first published in England, came this English Penguin Poets collection, by which time Frost had risen to an apex arguably unequalled by any American poet since - and, indeed, rivaled by few poets of any nationality. Frost spent his final years as "the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century" with an accumulating hoard of academic and civic honors. References: Crane A38; ANB.
