First (1st) Printing of the First Edition of this translation by W. M. Sloane. Part of The French Classical Romances series published by Collier in 1902. Translated from the French La Debacle (Charpentier, 1892), which was the penultimate novel in the author's 20 novel Les Rougon-Macquart series, a history of a family under the Second Empire. Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. Ex-Library with the following library markings only: (1) checkout card holder glued to front free endpaper; (2) withdrawn stamp at foot of title page; (3) 5-digit number at foot of first page of the Critical Introduction. The Text Block is clean, soft white, tight, straight and square with no markings of any kind other than those listed above. The Binding is full navy cloth, color uniform throughout, with gilt title, etc., to the spine, which has blindstamped fleur-de-lis, endpapers unmarked other than as described above, corners square with wear at the tips, and wear at the head and heel of the spine. No Jacket. See the photos. xxxvii, 624 pages. 5 5/8" x 8 1/4". The story is set against the background of the political and military tumults that ended the reign of Napoléon III and the Second Empire in 1870, in particular the Franco-Prussian War, the Battle of Sedan, and the Paris Commune.
