Miguel Covarrubias' (1904-1957) lithograph illustrations steal the show in this beautifully produced limited edition of Stowe's anti-slavery novel! Covarrubias was an influential Mexican-born illustrator and caricaturist whose work was well-known for capturing the spirit and essence of the Harlem Renaissance. The laid-in letter provides additional public response to Covarrubias' work during the time: "His gift for caricature has caused him to catch the essential qualities of the negroid face, the sloped dome of the head and the broad nose and the thick lip, so that the Negroes and non-Negroes (if we may refer to the yellow and ivory races in this negative manner) all feel delight in, and admiration for, the Covarrubias negro drawings."
