Schon als junger Mann erregt er im Ungarn der k. u. k. Monarchie durch seine Gedichte, die noch ganz im expressionistischen Stil befangen sind, große Aufmerksamkeit. Hier sollte bald eine Wandlung eintreten. Im November 1918 ist Jozsef Lengyel, der sich zur Erkenntnis eines richtigen Weltbildes durchgerungen hatte, einer der Begründer der Kommunistischen Partei Ungarns. Im Sommer 1919, nach dem Zu- sammenbruch der Räterepublik, tritt er den langen und schweren Weg der Emigration an. Bis 1927 lebt er in 'Wien, danach in Berlin, wo er an der ?Roten Fahne" und der ?Welt am Sonntag" mitarbeitet, als Filmdramaturg tätig ist und die Zeitschrift ?Film und Volk" redigiert. 1930 geht er in die Sowjetunion. Dort setzt er seine Arbeit fort. Er beginnt, am Prenn-Roman zu schreiben, kann aber nur die ersten beiden Kapitel vollenden. Bis zu seiner Heimkehr nach Ungarn im Jahre 1955 bleibt er auch in für ihn schweren Jahren seiner kommunistischen Überzeugung treu. Mehr indes zeigt sich Dery als der große Menschengestalter in seinem aus sechs Erzählungen bestehenden Zyklus ?Spiele der Unterwelt", Bildern aus dem Budapest des Jahres 1944. Während noch die nuancenreiche Geschichte vom naiven ?Riesen", der zum hilflosen Spielball in den Händen eines haltlosen Mädchens wird, Probleme des schwierigen Wiederaufbaus nach dem Kriege schildert, zeigt die heiter aufsteigende Erzählung ?Die Geburt des Menhyhert Simon" aus dem Jahre 1953, in der viele Leute ihr Leben einsetzen, um eine Gebärende zu retten, den Triumph menschlicher Solidarität.
