Nach seiner Fahrenszeit wirkte er von 1798 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1842 als Fabrikant und Reeder in Altona. 1935 schrieb er - zunächst ohne Veröffentlichungsabsicht - für seine inder und Enkel seine Lebenserinnerungen nieder.
