Contemporary full leather binding; boards rubbed/scuffed with wear at bumped corners; chipping at spine head with diagonal curled tear descending 3.5cm from spine's top left to right; minor loss at spine's scuffed heel; spine's title label is lacking but dulled gilt stamped "4" in fourth compartment and lower compartment-delineating gilt bars still discernable. Child's scribbling and inscription (one surname repeated in old ink) on front pastedown; pencil scribbling on pages 104-105; toning/foxing to interior leaves with some staining/soiling, edge-wear, and creased corners; tearing and strong crease to pages 285-286; remnant of book's missing last leaf adhered to rear pastedown. Missing front and rear free endpaper and flyleaves. First leaf present (pages i-ii) is title. Binding cracked in several spots but cords still holding quires. Sold as is. Published as the fourth volume within a seven volume set of sermons by Jacques Saurin [James Saurin] by Charleston, South Carolina printer John Hoff. Volumes 1-5 of the set were translated from the original French by Robert Robinson with the concluding two volumes respectively translated by Henry Hunter and Joseph Sutcliffe. The set was first compiled and published in London between 1775-1782 with the first American editions being initiated in New York in 1803 by competing printers L. Nichols and McFarlane & Long. Pre-1820 Charleston imprints are now quite uncommon.

On Jacques Saurin (Source: York University website): Jacques Saurin (1677-1730) was widely regarded for his eloquence in the pulpit. Born in France to Protestant parents, he was ordained a Catholic priest before converting to the Protestant (and Calvinistic) Reformed Church of France.
