Er analysiert dabei die Abhängigkeit der Übergangstemperatur von: Kornstruktur, Kaltverformung, interstitiellen Verunreinigungen, Dehnrate, Spannungszustand. Er stützt sich auf Cottrells Theorie der Versetzungsblockierung. Cottrell erklärt, warum Atome wie Kohlenstoff, Stickstoff, Sauerstoff sich an Versetzungen "anlagern" und sie festhalten - und dadurch das Metall härter, aber auch spröder machen. Das ist der berühmte Cottrell Wolken Effekt.Ein Metall kann sich bei höheren Temperaturen verformen (duktil), aber bei tieferen Temperaturen plötzlich ohne Warnung brechen (spröde). Der Punkt, an dem dieses Verhalten umschlägt, heißt Duktil Spröd Übergang.
