Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck (1854-1921) is widely celebrated as one of the most eloquent divines in the Reformed tradition. And yet there is a curious gap between Bavinck the theologian and the preachers who read him in the present day. How Bavinck preached, or what and how he thought about the act of preaching, are largely unknown. The largest barrier is that his writings on preaching were previously untranslated-until now. Herman Bavinck on Preaching & Preachers is a welcome translation from Dutch of Bavinck's thoughts on preaching and preachers, and includes one of his only written sermons. For Bavinck, the sermon was the most important part of the worship service, and the preaching of the word is the decisive mark of the church. He believed that the preacher must be a student of the word, search it in all its riches and depth, in its unity and diversity. Translator and editor James Eglinton describes this book as a ""useful and very interesting text on how to preach theology"" and a ""message that sorely needs to be heard if pulpits during our own time are to improve."" This is the first time this book is in print. Herman Bavinck on Preaching & Preachers has never been published before in either Dutch or English." This book charts the genealogy of the American branch of the Breese family as well as providing details of the interwoven family ties to several other prominent American families. The authors, Catharine Breese Griswold and Nathan Fitch Graves, explore nine generations dating back to their 18th-century Welsh ancestor Sidney Breese. Various letters, wills, family Bibles, and tomb inscriptions bring to life Sidney Breese and several other notable family members, including Elizabeth Anderson Breese. A woman of both strong religious conviction and refined taste, Elizabeth's life is emblematic of the ways in which religious observance and social etiquette intersected and shaped the lives of prominent 18th- and 19th-century Americans. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - John Dee (1527-1608), popularly remembered as an alchemist and spiritualist, was an enthusiastic scholar specialising in mathematics and astronomy, and collected manuscripts, early printed books and scientific instruments. Despite meeting Elizabeth I in person, he never progressed in the Church, and died in poverty. The four selections from his writings reissued here show Dee painstakingly listing his books before a journey to Europe, and appealing to the Queen for help when, after a catastrophic burglary at his library and the destruction of his laboratory equipment, his pay also failed to arrive. J. O. Halliwell (1842) reproduces the full text of Dee's diaries with an index; James Crossley (1851) transcribes Dee's appeals to the Queen; Bailey's book (1880), of which only 20 copies were printed, contains a full commentary on the last five years of the diaries; and M. R. James (1920) researches the fate of Dee's books over the centuries.
