Two volume set, both first editions (not stated - one and only printing). Staple-bound paperbacks: H 28cm x L 21.5cm. Toning and soiling to light gray paper covers; some tearing to spines' original brittle blue cloth binding tape. Edges toned. A few instances of light soiling and foxing to interior pages which, overall, remain c…lean; also a spots of smudging which appear to have occurred during printing rather than being a post-publication flaw. Bindings are firm. Front covers have blue lettering and blue rope border illustration with further decoration of a blue-tone photographic image by Birney Imes III of the cemetery's celebrated weeping angel funerary sculpture which adorns the burial plot of Reverend Thomas Cox Teasdale (1808-1891). VOLUME 1: [4], i-xii, 170 pages; Roman paginated leaves are mostly single-sided (i.e. printed rectos only) with primary pages 1-170 being double sided; Foreword on pages iii-iv provides a brief history of Friendship Cemetery; pages vi-xii feature ten b/w images of various Friendship Cemetery funerary sculptures and scenes by Birney Imes III, images are printed on rectos of non-glossy paper so tonal reproduction is marginal at best. VOLUME 2: [4], 171-359 pages (pagination in succession of Volume I); index of names; page 359 is a large foldout chart of the cemetery. Volumes are a rich genealogical resource for they feature names as well as birth and death dates of all marked cemetery interments. Over 2000 Confederate dead are buried in Friendship Cemetery but less than 350 are identified by name and regiment with even fewer having dates for most have only unmarked graves. Friendship Cemetery does have a segregated Jewish section with those names and dates listed at the rear of Volume II; a majority of the Jewish interments are post-1900. Although unmentioned in the Foreword, the racial segregation prevalent in everyday life in Mississippi extended to death as well and thus burials of African Americans were not permitted at Friendship Cemetery. VOLUME I serves as the first book appearance of photographic images by nationally known photographer and local Columbus, Mississippi resident Birney Imes whose books JUKE JOINT (University Press of Mississippi, 1990) and WHISPERING PINES (University Press of Mississippi, 1994) are celebrated photo documents of rural Mississippi. A very good- set.
