Prima edizione
Museum quality! Don't pass by this book. A clean and entirely complete example of the true 1811 first edition of James Mease's landmark civic survey, one of the foundational descriptive works on early 19th-century Philadelphia. Unlike the more common 1823/1824 Wilson composite edition, ** this is the original standalone printing **, produced by Kite at the height of the city's post-Revolution expansion. Collates complete: xii, 376 pp., folding frontispiece map present and intact, as issued. Binding: Original full leather with expected period wear; solid and unrestored. Interior: Moderate foxing consistent with American imprints of this era; text block clean, legible, and structurally sound. No missing pages. No rebinding. No modern repairs. A remarkably intact survival. Mease was a prominent physician, antiquarian, and early American scholar, created one of the most thorough documentations of early Philadelphia's civic fabric, industry, architecture, charitable institutions, and scientific culture. Works like this form the backbone of institutional Americana collections and are frequently cited in studies of the Early Republic. Institutional presence confirms importance but underscores scarcity: surviving 1811 copies are held at the Library of Congress, Free Library of Philadelphia, and select academic institutions, yet clean, original-binding examples in private hands remain uncommon. This copy retains its period leather, full collation, and original folding map?qualities increasingly difficult to find. A strong, collectible example of a rare and significant Philadelphia first edition, suitable for both private collectors and institutional consideration. Authenticity: 1. Collectors can confirm this is the true 1811 first edition by the following physical features Title Page: States "Philadelphia: Printed for and Published by B. & T. Kite, 1811." 2. Pagination: Continuous through p. 376 (with Subscribers' list at the end). 3. No later imprint or "Second Edition" statement anywhere in text. 4. Original binding and typeface: Early-19th-century letterpress with long-"s" characters typical of 1810s Philadelphia printing. 5. Include clear images of the title page, page 376, and the opening of Volume II to verify completeness and first-edition authenticity. Condition Report (Accurate, Collector-Grade) Binding: Original full leather boards with visible wear and edge rubbing consistent with age; joints remain intact and holding firmly Spine: Gilt title still legible; small chips and dryness typical for 200-year-old calf Pages: Complete and secure. Foxing and age toning throughout ? especially to endpapers and prelims ? but all text fully legible. Endpapers: Heavy foxing and offsetting, no mold Interior: Moderate scattered foxing, some page corners gently turned No missing or detached leaves Overall Grade: Good (+) on antiquarian scale ? sound, unrestored, and completely readable. This is an unrestored survivor in original condition, valued for authenticity rather than cosmetic perfection. Historical & Collector Significance Among the earliest urban histories printed in the United States Provides primary-source data on commerce, architecture, manufacturing, and civic institutions in early-Republic Philadelphia. Frequently cited by historians and genealogists studying post-colonial America.A true first edition, preceding the 1831 re-issue.
