James Alfred "Alf" Wight (* 3. Oktober 1916 in Roker, Sunderland; gestorben 23. Februar 1995 in Thirlby bei Thirsk), besser bekannt unter seinem Pseudonym James Herriot, war ein englischer Tierarzt und Buchautor. 25 Jahre nach Beginn seiner Tätigkeit als Landtierarzt fing er damit an, berufliche Erlebnisse in humorvollen Kurzgeschichten aufzuschreiben, die in der fiktiven Stadt Darrowby und ihrer Umgebung spielten. Von 1970 bis 1992 entstanden acht Bücher, aus denen auch zwei Kinofilme und die erfolgreiche Fernsehserie "All Creatures Great and Small" (deutsch: "Der Doktor und das liebe Vieh") hervorgingen. 1965 beschloss Wight, einen schon lang gehegten Plan umzusetzen und ein Buch über seine Erlebnisse zu schreiben; nach mehreren Anläufen erschien 1970 sein erstes Buch, das für ein Werk eines noch vollkommen unbekannten Autors außergewöhnlich großen Erfolg hatte. Da Wight noch viel Erzählstoff zur Verfügung stand, folgten weitere Bücher mit wachsendem Erfolg. Die Beliebtheit seiner Werke freute Wight, doch er unterbrach seine tierärztliche Tätigkeit nicht; das Schreiben betrachtete er stets als Hobby. Insbesondere öffentliche Auftritte waren ihm unangenehm. Mehrmals zitiert sein Sohn Jim in seiner Biographie den Ausspruch: "Ich bin 1 Prozent Buchautor und 99 Prozent Tierarzt."
