This book is the 2nd printing from the last London edition. Making this the first US Edition, in a single volume, 1853 The book is complete, but both the front an rear covers have become detached. Please see photos for details. There is also a slight separation of the spine. There is also quite a bit of foxing throughout which is consistent with age. Grade is primarily due to the detachment of the covers. However, what makes this book fascinating is the association. This book belonged to Chaplain Carl Scherzer with his RARE signature on the ffep. Scherzer was a pioneer in the clinical pastoral education and wrote several books on the topic. Laid in is a handwritten letter (ALS) to Scherzer from George C. Klinger who was also a longtime English professor, historian and author. Carl John Scherzer (May 2, 1901 - August 1966), a prominent hospital chaplain and author based in Evansville, Indiana?the same city where the University of Evansville is located. Scherzer served as the chaplain at Protestant Deaconess Hospital (now Deaconess Health System) in Evansville for much of his career. He was a pioneer in clinical pastoral education, emphasizing the integration of spiritual care with medical treatment. He received specialized training in pastoral counseling during summers at institutions like the Federal Council of Churches' summer school. - Contributions to Chaplaincy: He was one of the founders of the Chaplains' Association of the American Protestant Hospitals and later served as president of the College of Chaplains (now part of the Association of Professional Chaplains). His work focused on "ministering to the sick and dying," blending theology with practical psychology. - Scherzer was a prolific author on pastoral care and healing. Notable books include: - The Church and Healing (1950, Westminster Press) - A 272-page exploration of the church's role in physical and spiritual health. - Springs of Living Water (1951) - A guide for pastoral ministry. - Ministering to the Physically Sick (1963, Prentice-Hall) - Part of the "Successful Pastoral Counseling" series. - Ministering to the Dying (1966) - Another in the same series, published shortly before his death. - Death: He passed away on August 24, 1966, at age 65 in Deaconess Hospital (ironically, the institution where he worked). George C. Klinger (August 5, 1928 - January 18, 2010), was a longtime English professor and university historian in Evansville, Indiana. Born and raised in New York City, Klinger earned a Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University. He moved to Evansville in the late 1960s to join the University of Evansville faculty. He taught English for 47 years (roughly 1963-2010), specializing in composition, literature, and writing pedagogy. He held roles like department chair and contributed to campus publications. Post-retirement, he led the popular "Wednesday Mornings at UE" adult education classes. In 1977, he published an article titled "A Campus View of College Writing" in *College Composition and Communication*, reflecting his expertise in teaching writing. About the author: Anna Brownell Jameson [1794-1860] essayist, travel writer, biographer, art and literary critic. Separated from her husband, Jameson made her first journey to Germany where she developed a passion for German art and literature. She joined her husband briefly in Upper Canada and recorded her experiences in a travel book, before returning to England alone. Her circle of friends included Lady Byron, Jane Carlyle, Fanny Kemble, Elizabeth Gaskell, the Brownings and Harriete Martineau. Her art criticism was much admired, including the above, in which she "expands the aesthetic context to propound her views on womanhood." Jameson was quite concerned with the legal and educational rights of women and her later writings addressed several of the issues involving women NOTE: I am not a true bookseller, but have collected for decades. This book explores the development of historical thought in the United States from its beginnings in the 19th century to its modern manifestations through the personal reflections of the senior scholar Edward Channing. It describes the transition from the works of George Bancroft and Francis Parkman to the rise of the "scientific school" of historians, the influence of German academic research, and the emergence of social and cultural history in the 20th century. The author examines the impact of historians like James Harvey Robinson, Frederick Jackson Turner, Charles Beard, and Carl Becker, who expanded the scope of historical inquiry. By looking through the lens of Channing's life and career, this book provides an insightful understanding of the evolution of American historical scholarship and its contributions to broader intellectual trends. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
