Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl LP, probably most famous for the fact hardly anyone ever got to hear it over the radio, Fontana / Mercury SRF-67610 (and the Mercury Records identifier is in the smallest type imaginable), near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus two-color cardboard jacket. The track everyone got so excited about, "Je T'Aime . . . Moi Non Plus" comprises four minutes 25 seconds of Jane and (to some extent) Serge whispering, panting and moaning, either pretending to engage in reproductive behavior or . . . not pretending. (Who can say?) Ms. Birkin, while no Bardot, was a pretty peaches-and-cream English lass who went on to have a creditable acting career. There are 10 other tracks on this LP, from "69 Annee Erotique" to "Le Canari Est Sur Le Balcon" to "Les Sucettes" (The Little Sweets), all written by Serge Gainsbourg and arranged by Arthur Greenslade, though how many ever actually got listened to is anybody's guess. (Originally recorded in 1967 with Gainsbourg's then-girlfreind, Brigitte Bardot, who -- having subsequently married a German businessman -- pleaded with Gainsbourg not to release it.
