Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 6 X 9 inches. 329 pages. Illustrated with both color and black and white phots of art installations. Lacking the DJ this hardcover book is in near fine condition. Bruce Nauman has been a force in the art world since the early 1960s with his challenging audio and video installations, photographic art, neon art, and sculptures. However, until now there has been surprisingly little sustained critical analysis of his extraordinary oeuvre. "Nauman Reiterated offers the first scholarly assessment of the artist's production with an in-depth thematic investigation of key works created between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. Janet Kraynak argues that the coherence of Nauman's art can be found not in conventional categorizations of style, medium, or technique, but through understanding the artistic and cultural conditions that led to an interdisciplinary aesthetic of performance, which emerged in relation to technologies of reproduction, inscription, and recording. Kraynak provides a portrait of an artist who regularly defies expectations and genres, showing how Nauman's work responds to historical problems that have only increased in importance since he first addressed them, especially the technologization of society initiated by electronic media. Nauman's reaction to the technological takeover of modern society, Kraynak suggests, is reiteration. Building from these observations, Kraynak explores how performance is intimately associated with the acceleration toward a fully technological society, which sees new modes of electronic recording and reproduction, the growth of information technologies, and the consolidation of technocracy. Through extensive archival research Kraynak has written a revealing examination of Nauman's thought-provoking and protean work.".

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Intrigued and inspired by the neon beer signs on shopfronts in his SanFrancisco neighborhood, Bruce Nauman created his first neon piece, Window or WallSign, in 1967. He wanted, he said, to achieve 'an art that would kind ofdisappear--that was supposed to not quite look like art.' Light offered Nauman amedium both elusive and effervescent, but one that could also aggressively convey amessage. Over the first three decades of his career, Nauman used the medium of lightto explore the twists and turns of perception, logic, and meaning with the earnestplayfulness that characterizes all his art. Elusive Signs focuses on the discretebody of Nauman's work that uses neon and fluorescent light in signs and roominstallations, and includes images of nearly all Nauman's work with light.AfterWindow or Wall Sign, Nauman embarked on a series of neons that grappled with thesemiotics of body and identity, and with My Name as Though it Were Written on theSurface of the Moon (1968), he forces the viewer to contemplate the role of namingin forming identity. Language--signs and symbols--plays an important role inNauman's art. His later neon works emphasize the neon as a sign, presentingprovocative twists of language and offering harsh and humorous sociopoliticalcommentary in such pieces as Run from Fear, Fun from Rear (1972). This seriesculminates in the monumental, billboard-size One Hundred Live and Die (1984), whichemploys overwhelming scale to bombard the viewer with sardonic aphorisms. Inincisive essays that accompany the images of Nauman's work, Joseph Ketner II of theMilwaukee Art Museum (which originated the exhibit this book accompanies) andcritics Janet Kraynak and Gregory Volk analyze the works in light both as a body ofwork and as an access point to Nauman's entire career.Distributed for the MilwaukeeArt Museum. Images of nearly all Bruce Nauman's signs and room installation using neon and fluorescent light, from Window or Wall Sign (1967) to the monumental One Hundred Live and Die (1984), accompanied by interpretive essays. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Where relevant, the texts are accompanied by illustrations of the artworks for which they were composed. In the critical essay that serves as the book's introduction, the editor investigates Nauman's art in relation to the linguistic turn in art practices of the 1960s - understanding language through the speech-act - and its legacy in contemporary ad."--Jacket.
