Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. At the onset of the 21st century, 47 per cent of the worlds population was urban: 74 per cent in the more developed regions and 41 per cent in the less developed regions. Further, among the less developed regions, levels of urbanization in Asia and Africa were the lowest, that is, about 37 per cent. According to UN HABITAT, 2006, Asia and Africa will host the largest population in the 21st century and not only cities will continue to be the sites of extreme inequality, it is also feared that Asian cities may not be able to cope with the pace of urbanization. Keeping with the trends in the world, there is also spurt in urbanization in India, which poses serious challenges for both urban development and urban governance. Earlier, urban development did not receive much attention in India, primarily due to low rate of urbanization. In 2005, it was taken as a serious agenda by the government when Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission was launched.Divided into three sections, the present anthology focuses on the challenges of urbanization and urban development for the ongoing and future governance. The challenges are manifold and in that context urban governance needs to be looked at from a fresh perspective and be given serious consideration to avoid further urban chaos and crisis. The present volume is an effort to bring together diverse perspectives on the urban governance to have comprehensive mapping of the urban issue in India.…

Marriage and family are the two most basic and resilient institutions of society which are undergoing change to accommodate the changing needs and demands of the society. Even though marriage and family have been studied extensively by sociologists, social anthropologists and demographers, not much has been studied from the family demography perspective. The socio-economic, demographic and technological changes have altered the reproductive behaviour and family formation, hence family demography is an important perspective to analyse family change. Keeping all these issues in the forefront, the present anthology tries to answer some important questions. What kind of changes are taking place in the institution of marriage? How important is marriage for the new generations and what are their views concerning various aspects of marriage? What are the ideologies and practices concerning child bearing and family formation? Lastly, what kind of challenges are emerging in contemporary times due to the socio-demographic changes? Here, an effort has been made to understand the changes in the process of family formation in India. Though some changes in marriage practices can be noticed yet, unlike the western societies, the significance of marriage for family formation has not undergone change in India. In future, both marriage and family will experience fresh challenges and will undergo further transformation and change. It remains to be seen as to how gender and sexual revolutions will affect family and marriage in the diverse Indian situation. (jacket).…

Towards the end of the twentieth century city reemerged as a unit of analysis and globalization as an important context for analyzing social transformation and dynamics shaping the society. A city is the site where micro and macro social processes and global and local contexts can be articulated and observed. Urbanologists and social scientists have so far focused on those cities which have been greatly benefited by globalization. A lot of literature has come about on the cities in the developed countries but cities in the developing countries have not been studied much. These cities are not global but globalizing cities. The present book anthologizes various aspects of segregation in globalizing cities of ten developing countries of Africa Asia and Latin America which have been differently affected by globalization. Social issues at stake may be common to the developing countries yet the global contexts may have different connotations and consequences in the local structures. The main objective of this anthology is to study the socio spatial segregation and inequalities that have emerged in such globalizing cities under the impact of globalization forces and local social structure. 422 pp. …

Urbanization got an impetus during 1980s and 1990s due to advances in transportation and telecommunication and further momentum was provided by globalization. During this period many Asian Countries experienced both economic boom and population increase. UN HABITAT (2006) pointed out that Asia and Africa will host largest urban population in twenty first century and cities will continue to be sites of extreme inequality. It is feared that Asian cities may not be able to cope with the ongoing urbanization and urbanization of poverty further adds to the challenges. This edited volume addresses to the challenges thrown by urban poverty for sustainable cities in developing countries and also presents some strategies adopted in these countries to deal with these challenges. The volume contains seventeen articles which are divided into three sections. Sections I entitled Urban Poverty in Developing Countries Some Issues contains five articles dealing with urban poverty and delineates certain issues related to it. Section II entitled Urban Poverty in India Empirical Reality contains five articles which present the empirical situation of urban poverty in India. Section III entitled Urban Poverty and Strategies for Sustainable Cities anthologizes seven articles dealing with some strategies to grapple with the problem of urban poverty in developing countries and the outcome of these efforts. All these efforts to achieve sustainable cities are not producing desired results. Cities cannot be sustainable if rural areas neighborhoods and communities are not sustainable. So focus must shift to these settlements as well. 414 pp.…
