Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 50pp article, printed in double columns, illustrated with some 35 drawings and reproductions of examples, about 20 of which are full-page plates, and a number of text drawings as well, salvaged from a damaged issue of The Century Magazine, Volume 87, No. 5, March, 1914. From the editor, "No department of human activity shows more definitely than artistic expression the working of those great changes which characterize this age, and no art form has yielded to new tendencies so much as painting. One of those revolutions against settled standards, the history of which is the history of art, is now in full career; and it is time that we study signs, seek to define directions, and somewhat forecast the convention that is to come. It is the purpose od these papers to make plain what so far may be determined from the visible portents." Housed in protective mylar report cover.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. Quintanilla, Luis [drawings] (illustratore). ALL THE BRAVE, DRAWINGS OF THE SPANISH WAR BY LUIS QUINTANILLA, text by Elliot Paul and Jay Allen, preface by Ernest Hemingway, softcover, illustrated with 67 pencil drawings, probable first edition, 1939. ITEM CONDITION: fair. The text block and drawings are in very good condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. There is no bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a remainder or public library item. The illustrated wraps are in poor condition (tears, front cover almost detached, edge chipping). 11 x 8, unpaginated but approximately 90-100 pages, 67 of which are full page pencil drawings, 14 ounces. XX [From the introduction] THE BOOK AND THE AUTHORS. A very great artist, two famous novelists, and a fine journalist have collaborated to produce a book which is not only a bitter and exciting indictment of war and fascism, but a literary and artistic achievement of the utmost importance. For the first time in history, a great artist, who is also a great soldier, has not only seen war, but experienced it, and embodied the experiences in a magnificent series of drawings which challenge the famous and powerful war plates of Goya. The four men who have made the book are bound together by a warm friendship, a common experience, and loyalty to a common cause. Quintanilla himself has seen his country destroyed by civil war, and his own famous murals shattered by Franco's guns. He has fought in most major engagements of the war, and personally led the attack on the Montaña barracks that saved Madrid for the government. Hemingway has known Spain, loved it, and written of it for many years, but here he writes not only of Spain in turmoil, but of the life of a man who is his friend. Elliot Paul knows Spain intimately, and already, in The Life And Death Of A Spanish Town, has written one of the really fine books of recent years. Jay Allen, for 10 years the Chicago Tribune correspondent in Europe, of which five years were spent in Spain, has a thorough knowledge of the country and a great friendship for its people. This book is a must, not only for artists and collectors, but for everyone who is interested in what is happening to our civilization.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. v, [1], 346 pages. Appendix A-D. Figures. Maps. Tables. References. Index. Ernest J. Sternglass, Joseph J. Mangano, and William McDonnell were members of The Radiation and Public Health Project. Inscribed by Sternglass inside the front cover. Inscription reads To Henry and Jenna The evidence is there, but the public does not know of it. With warmest regards Ernst Oct. 12, 97. Jay Martin Gould earned his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College and his doctorate from Columbia University. In 1985, Dr. Gould founded the Radiation and Public Health Project, an antinuclear research group. Jay M. Gould was a statistician and epidemiologist whose contention that radiation from nuclear power plants was causing high rates of cancer in surrounding neighborhoods made him a leading figure in the antinuclear movement. , Dr. Gould routinely warned that low levels of radiation from nuclear reactors were far more dangerous than commonly believed and were quietly poisoning Americans. Ernest Joachim Sternglass (24 September 1923 - 12 February 2015) was a professor emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh and director of the Radiation and Public Health Project. He is an American physicist and author, best known for his controversial research on the health risks of low-level radiation from atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons and from nuclear power plants. Joseph Mangano, MPH, MBA, is the Executive Director for the Radiation and Public Health Project in New York and has served the organization since 1989. From the rear cover of this 346-page book: "'The Enemy Within' exposes the startling correlation between deadly diseases and proximity to nuclear reactors. Using data from the National Cancer Institute, state health departments, and the Center for Disease Control, author Jay Gould offers official statistical evidence proving that residents of nuclear counties - the 1,321 counties within 100 miles of a reactor - suffer disproportionately from the interaction of nuclear fallout with industrial pollutants and other sources of urban stress. Gould examines why women in nuclear counties have such a hugely inflated risk of breast cancer, why there are large numbers of premature and underweight births, why AIDS and other immune deficiency syndromes seem to be related more to where you live than how you live. The answers lie in nuclear fallout patterns. In the fifty years since the commencement of the Nuclear Age, over 1.5 million American women have died of breast cancer; prior to 1945 the breast cancer incidence rate had been declining. The anomaly is also true for low birthweights and immune deficiency syndromes. [This book] looks closely at the true cost of nuclear fallout - costs we can no longer afford to pay - and it presents our only reasonable solution: to ban the operation of nuclear power stations, nuclear weapon manufacturing, and nuclear bomb testing.".
