Essais et philosophie. - L'erreur tragique que commit Heidegger en 1933, en croyant sincèrement que le chef du…parti national-socialiste ouvrier allemand, Adolf Hitler, pouvait sauver l'Allemagne de sa misère et de sa détresse, a fait l'objet de nombreux commentaires. Aussi rien de nouveau ne peut sortir de ces polémiques aveugles, qui négligent un examen précis des documents et de leur sens. Considérant Heidegger comme le plus grand penseur de notre temps, le seul à la mesure de ce temps de détresse dont parlait Hölderlin, cet ouvrage s'efforce de dissiper des malentendus, habituellement entretenus. Par un examen rigoureux des documents et des archives nazies, il établit ce que signifia réellement ce "rectorat de 1933", le sens qu'il faut lui reconnaître dans la pensée de ce philosophe. Par là, c'est l'ensemble du "chemin de pensée" de Heidegger, du séminaire de Constance au rectorat de Fribourg, qui nous est restitué. Suivant pas à pas la formation de la pensée de Heidegger, il est montré que seule, une interrogation sur le stade ultime de la métaphysique occidentale et son achèvement dans la technique mondiale rend compréhensible le sens que ce philosophe crût reconnaître au mouvement national-socialiste allemand, à travers l'uvre peu connue d'Ernst Jünger der Arbeiter (1932), qu'il commenta, dans des séminaires finalement interdits par le NSDAP. L'erreur politique de Heidegger, dont il n'est pas question de nier la gravité, ne nous apparaît en pleine lumière qu'avec l'élucidation des figures qui traversent l'horizon de cet achèvement, celle de Nietzsche, de Rainer Maria Rilke, de Trakl qui, tous tentèrent un même passage hors des déserts et de la nuit métaphysique de l'Occident. Tout cela Nietzsche, le chercheur passionné de Dieu et dernier penseur de la métaphysique occidentale, le savait bien lorsqu'il s'écriait: "Ne fait-il pas plus froid? Ne voyez-vous pas venir la nuit et toujours la nuit ? Ne faut-il pas allumer des lanternes en plein jour?".
