Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Used. Depression and its Treatment (1985) by John H. Greist, MD & James W. Jefferson, MD ? Warner Books ISBN: 0446327182 Condition: Used (slightly weary, still supportive, very much here for you) Offered with a sympathetic sigh by Crappy Old Books Here it is: a self-help classic from that noble era when, if you were having a hard time, you didn?t open an app ? you bought a paperback with a serious title and a lot of footnotes. Depression and its Treatment is exactly what it says on the tin: two psychiatrists calmly explaining what depression is, why it happens, and what can be done about it? in a tone that assumes you might actually sit down and read several chapters in a row. Inside, you?ll find a straightforward, medically-minded walk through the world of low mood, loss of interest, ?why am I like this??, and the various ways professionals try to help. There are explanations. There are case examples. There are discussions of therapy and medication, back when ?medication? came in fewer flavours and nobody used the phrase ?brain chemistry? as a catch-all explanation for everything from sadness to not answering emails. Is some of the science and terminology a bit 1985? Absolutely. Does it still offer a surprisingly clear, compassionate picture of what depression is and is not ? Also yes. Think of it as a time capsule from the days when mental health books were printed on slightly yellowing paper instead of glowing at you from a screen at 2 a.m. This particular copy, gently salvaged by Crappy Old Books , is proudly Used ? which, frankly, feels thematically appropriate. It may show: A cover with minor scuffs, as if it has spent time on a bedside table next to a lamp and a half-finished cup of tea. A spine with creases, evidence that someone once worked their way through the chapters, hopefully with at least a little comfort gained along the way. Pages that are tanned, soft at the edges, and quietly wise in that ?I?ve seen some things? paperback sort of way. No promises that this book will ?fix? your life (it?s a paperback, not a miracle), but it does do something valuable and modest: it explains, in human language, what doctors mean when they talk about depression and what treatments were considered helpful at the time. No glitter, no pop-psych buzzwords, just two MDs trying to be useful. Perfect for: People curious about how depression and its treatment were described before everything became an inspirational infographic. Readers who actually like serious, medically-informed books but don?t mind a little antique charm with their information. Anyone assembling a shelf of mental health history, where this fits neatly between ?Concerned 70s Pamphlets? and ?Overconfident 90s Optimism.? Important note: this Used volume is a historical and informational companion, not a replacement for an actual doctor, therapist, or reaching out to someone if you?re struggling right now. It?s a book, not an emergency service. Adopt this slightly worn copy of Depression and its Treatment , give it a spot on your shelf, and let it remind you that long before hashtags and wellness apps, people were already trying ? earnestly, imperfectly ? to understand what it means to feel unbearably low and how to make things a bit less heavy.
