De Ploeg ("The Plough" or "The Group") is an artist collective from the city of Groningen in the Netherlands, established in 1918 by a group of young artists. Their goal was to create new opportuni…ties for exhibitions and to educate the general public about developments in art, architecture, and literature. The name was suggested by one of the founding members Jan Altink, because he felt like a lot of ground still had to be broken for modern art in Groningen. Several art styles were prominent within "De Ploeg", including expressionism, constructivism and impressionism. This artist collective still exists, but its most important time lay in the 1920s.

The experiments with printing techniques and the development of a unique visual language make Werkman a remarkable innovator within twentieth-century art. For the first time, this publication provides a complete overview of Werkman's extensive oeuvre. The publication is the culmination of the work of the Werkmanproject, which started in 2002, an initiative of the H.N. Workman. The in-depth investigation into the complete oeuvre of H.N. Werkman was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Dieuwertje Dekkers. The publication makes an important contribution to the now multifaceted picture of Dutch art history in the interwar period.
