FACTS devices improve the existing power system's efficiency and reliability thus enabling us to meet power system load and performance requirements without the need to install new transmission lines or generation utilities. Among the FACTS devices the UPFC is the most versatile and effective device. The UPFC consists of two voltage source converters connected back to back through a DC capacitor. The UPFC is used for real-time control and dynamic compensation of ac transmission systems, providing multifunctional flexibility required to solve many of the problems facing the power industry. The UPFC is able to control, simultaneously or selectively, all the parameters affecting power flow in electric transmission.
