I kdyz nepatri mezi ctyri klasicke cinske romany, je povazovan za vrchol cinske klasicke prozy. Autor vyuziva nektere tradicni vypravecske metody, avsak klade duraz na psychologii postav a lyrizujici popis prostredi. Roman je urcen predevsim vzdelane vrstve, coz souvisi s jeho subjektivnejsim ladenim a autobiografickymi prvky.
