Love, to whom the book is inscribed, was an esteemed author and educator and the first African-American to serve as superintendent for the Chicago Public Schools district. Margaret Burroughs (1917-2010) was a Chicago-based black artist, poet, community organizer, political activist, and educator. In 1940 she worked with the WPA to establish the South Side Community Art Center. In 1961 she co-founded the DuSable Museum of African American History. Among the honors she received over her lifetime were a President's Humanitarian Award from Gerald Ford in 1975 and an appointment to the National Commission on African American History and Culture by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. The book offered here is signed by Burroughs and inscribed by her on the front free endpaper: "To the Terrell Family with love--Sincerely, Margaret Burroughs 8/13/82." Lloyd Preston Terrell was a black minister, writer, and activist in both Georgia and New jersey. Provenance: purchased from the Terrell family. The book and dust jacket are in almost as-new condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED. Book.
