Eine vollständige Ausgabe seiner Briefe, die Einblick in Seumes Leben als Student und zwangsrekrutie…rter Soldat, als Hofmeister und russischer Leutnant, als Lektor und Druckereiaufseher des Verlegers Georg Joachim Göschen, als Fußreisender nach Italien 1801/02 und nach Rußland, Finnland und Schweden 1805 gewähren würde, wurde seit jeher als Desiderat empfunden. Nach Vorarbeiten durch Adolf Schmiedecke in den siebziger Jahren in der DDR und durch Inge Stephan in der Bundesrepublik legen nun Jörg Drews und Dirk Sangmeister eine Ausgabe sämtlicher Briefe von und an Johann Gottfried Seume vor, welche auch die zu erschließenden, aber nicht mehr vorhandenen Briefe von und an Seume verzeichnet.In Seumes Briefen machen wir die Bekanntschaft eines bald außerordentlich temperamentvollen und launigen, bald stoischen und stolzen und in raschem Wechsel auch wieder zärtlichen und sich bisweilen verplaudernden Briefschreibers.Der erste Brief stammt von dem Leipziger Studenten im Jahre 1780, der letzte datiert wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod aus dem Jahre 1810. Die wichtigsten Briefpartner Seumes sind sein Arbeitgeber Georg Joachim Göschen, in dessen Druckerei zu Grimma er von 1797 bis 1801 als Lektor und Korrektor arbeitete. Danach trat er seinen Spaziergang nach Syrakus an. Weitere wichtige Briefpartner sind der alte Gleim in Halberstadt, den Seume wie einen Vater verehrte, und Karl August Böttiger, der Weimarer und Leipziger Zeitschriftenredakteur und Altertumskundler, sowie jener hessische Militär, den es mit Seume nach Nordamerika verschlagen hatte: Die spannungsreiche Freundschaft zwischen dem konservativen Adeligen Karl Heino von Münchhausen und dem Sympathisanten der Französischen Revolution brachte einige der schönsten, kräftigsten Briefe Seumes hervor, der allerdings in den Briefen an seine beiden unglücklichen Lieben Wilhelmina Röder und Johanna Loth auch Formulierungen zärtlichster Liebe zu finden imstande war. Spät im Leben traf Seume dann auf jenen väterlichen Freund, Christoph Martin Wieland, dem er sich vielleicht am vertrauensvollsten geöffnet hat. Wieland seinerseits fand die wärmsten Worte für den Einzelgänger Seume, der erst nach 1802 zum politischen Schriftsteller wurde, sich aber im Zeichen der Napoleonischen Herrschaft, als Sympathien für revolutionäre Ideen von der Tagesordnung verschwunden waren, nicht mehr preußen- und feudalismuskritisch äußern durfte.Die Ausgabe enthält 377 Briefe von und 120 Briefe an Seume, darunter 112 lediglich bezeugte bzw. erschlossene Schreiben (20 von und 92 an Seume). Von diesen Briefen werden 64 Schreiben in dieser Ausgabe erstmals veröffentlicht, weitere 31 bislang nur durch Teildrucke bekannte Briefe werden erstmals in voller Länge abgedruckt; rund 300 Briefe erscheinen hier erstmals in diplomatisch getreuem Wortlaut. Komplettiert wird die Ausgabe durch einen Anhang von zehn Stammbucheinträgen Seumes. Der Kommentar mit seiner Vielzahl an Einzelerläuterungen legt Rechenschaft ab über die Fundorte der Briefe und die unserer Ausgabe zugrunde gelegten Fassungen; er macht detaillierte Angaben zur Publikationsgeschichte der Briefe sowie über Personen und Sachverhalte, auf die Seumes Briefe sich beziehen. Damit liegt ein wichtiges Briefcorpus der Spätaufklärung endlich in einer vollständigen Ausgabe vor. 1232 pp. Deutsch.

Nach Vorarbeiten durch Adolf Schmiedecke in den siebziger Jahren in der DDR und durch Inge Stephan in der Bundesrepublik legen nun Jörg Drews und Dirk Sangmeister eine Ausgabe sämtlicher Briefe von und an Johann Gottfried Seume vor, welche auch die zu erschließenden, aber nicht mehr vorhandenen Briefe von und an Seume verzeichnet.In Seumes Briefen machen wir die Bekanntschaft eines bald außerordentlich temperamentvollen und launigen, bald stoischen und stolzen und in raschem Wechsel auch wieder zärtlichen und sich bisweilen verplaudernden Briefschreibers.Der erste Brief stammt von dem Leipziger Studenten im Jahre 1780, der letzte datiert wenige Wochen vor seinem Tod aus dem Jahre 1810. Die wichtigsten Briefpartner Seumes sind sein Arbeitgeber Georg Joachim Göschen, in dessen Druckerei zu Grimma er von 1797 bis 1801 als Lektor und Korrektor arbeitete. Danach trat er seinen Spaziergang nach Syrakus an. Weitere wichtige Briefpartner sind der alte Gleim in Halberstadt, den Seume wie einen Vater verehrte, und Karl August Böttiger, der Weimarer und Leipziger Zeitschriftenredakteur und Altertumskundler, sowie jener hessische Militär, den es mit Seume nach Nordamerika verschlagen hatte: Die spannungsreiche Freundschaft zwischen dem konservativen Adeligen Karl Heino von Münchhausen und dem Sympathisanten der Französischen Revolution brachte einige der schönsten, kräftigsten Briefe Seumes hervor, der allerdings in den Briefen an seine beiden unglücklichen Lieben Wilhelmina Röder und Johanna Loth auch Formulierungen zärtlichster Liebe zu finden imstande war. Spät im Leben traf Seume dann auf jenen väterlichen Freund, Christoph Martin Wieland, dem er sich vielleicht am vertrauensvollsten geöffnet hat. Wieland seinerseits fand die wärmsten Worte für den Einzelgänger Seume, der erst nach 1802 zum politischen Schriftsteller wurde, sich aber im Zeichen der Napoleonischen Herrschaft, als Sympathien für revolutionäre Ideen von der Tagesordnung verschwunden waren, nicht mehr preußen- und feudalismuskritisch äußern durfte.Die Ausgabe enthält 377 Briefe von und 120 Briefe an Seume, darunter 112 lediglich bezeugte bzw. erschlossene Schreiben (20 von und 92 an Seume). Von diesen Briefen werden 64 Schreiben in dieser Ausgabe erstmals veröffentlicht, weitere 31 bislang nur durch Teildrucke bekannte Briefe werden erstmals in voller Länge abgedruckt; rund 300 Briefe erscheinen hier erstmals in diplomatisch getreuem Wortlaut. Komplettiert wird die Ausgabe durch einen Anhang von zehn Stammbucheinträgen Seumes. Der Kommentar mit seiner Vielzahl an Einzelerläuterungen legt Rechenschaft ab über die Fundorte der Briefe und die unserer Ausgabe zugrunde gelegten Fassungen; er macht detaillierte Angaben zur Publikationsgeschichte der Briefe sowie über Personen und Sachverhalte, auf die Seumes Briefe sich beziehen. Damit liegt ein wichtiges Briefcorpus der Spätaufklärung endlich in einer vollständigen Ausgabe vor. 1232 pp. Deutsch.
