Mit sechzehn Jahren verließ er die Insel und wurde bei de Royal Air Force in Kanada ausgebildet. Er ging nach England und blies dort bis nach dem Krieg. In London und Edinburgh studierte er Geschichte, begann zu schreiben und wurde Schriftleiter einer Studentenzeitung. Dann kehrte er nach Jamaika zurück, wo er seither als Lehre arbeitet: «ein guter Beruf für einen jungen Autor, da er ihm für sich selber Zeit läßt». Hearne teilt die pessimistischen Ansichten so vieler seiner Schriftsteller-Kollegen über die Gegenwart nicht. Er schreibt: «Ich mag die Klagen der Leute nicht hören, die in unserer Zeit den Niedergang des Schöpferischen sehen.
