Mit sechzehn Jahren verließ er die Insel und wurde bei de Royal Air Force in Kanada ausgebildet. Er ging nach England und blies dort bis nach dem Krieg. In London und Edinburgh studierte er Geschichte, begann zu schreiben und wurde Schriftleiter einer Studentenzeitung. Dann kehrte er nach Jamaika zurück, wo er seither als Lehre arbeitet: «ein guter Beruf für einen jungen Autor, da er ihm für sich selber Zeit läßt». Hearne teilt die pessimistischen Ansichten so vieler seiner Schriftsteller-Kollegen über die Gegenwart nicht. Er schreibt: «Ich mag die Klagen der Leute nicht hören, die in unserer Zeit den Niedergang des Schöpferischen sehen. Eine Epoche, die in einem halben Jahrhundert die Relativitätstheorie, Picasso, Yeats, Valery, Eisenstein, T. S. Eliot, Hemingway, Faulkner, die City von New York und die Kernphysik hervorzubringen vermag, kann so schlecht nicht sein.» Seine Bücher wiesen ihn sofort als einen Autor von kräftiger eigener Prägung aus. Sie zeigen einen unkomplizierten, zupackenden und poetischen Stil. INHALT: In dem vorliegenden Werk, seinem Erstling, führt uns der junge Autor in seine Heimat Jamaika. Hier bricht ein Aufstand aus, die Folge vieler ungerechter Jahre. Er trifft Schuldige und Unschuldige. Der Rechtsanwalt und Politiker Mark Lattimer entkommt blutend und verbirgt sich in einer stickigen Dachkammer. Während draußen die Unruhen toben, läuft vor dem angstgepeinigten Mann noch einmal der Film seines Lebens ab. Er lernt, daß auch sein Weg in die Katastrophe münden mußte. Hinter diesem aktuellen Stoff werden die alten, die dauernden Regungen des Gewissens lebendig und offenbar. Die Menschen dieses Buches sind nicht nur Jamaikaner, es sind Menschen schlechthin, und so fordern sie Mitempfinden und Teilnahme heraus. Weitere Werke, die den Namen ihres Autors weithin bekannt machten, sind: «Der Andere» und «Gesichter der Liebe». Beide Bände sind ebenfalls im R.
