Second edition (as stated upon title page). 492 pages. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 13.25cm. Original red cloth boards well rubbed and mottled; small cloth loss at frayed spine ends; board corners bumped and worn. Front hinge shaken; rear hinge remains firm. Light green floral endpapers. Non-authorial gift inscription in antiquarian ink on front flyleaf; old pencil notation upon page 3. Three quires slightly pulled. Mostly minimal to mild foxing upon interior leaves save for a few strong occurrences. Four foldout leaves featuring musical scores - "Symphony of Life - Movement I" (between pages 44-45); "Symphony of Life - Movement II" (between pages 152-153); "Symphony of Life - Movement III" (between pages 378-379); "Symphony of Life - Movement IV" (between pages 450-451) - which play into the book's usually quirky plot. Curious novel authored by Virginius Dabney (1835-1894) who claims in the Preface to be merely editing the papers of a Mr. John Bouche Whacker which is, of course, yet another of the novel's literary devices. Only a fair copy but a very uncommon and intriguing nineteenth century novel with distinct postmodern elements.
