Prima edizione
Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Edition thus. First printing thus. Format is approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. 512 pages. Contains over 250 illustrations (some in color). Includes Introduction by Fox Butterfield, Chronology, Biographies, Bibliography, and Index. Also includes chapters on The Price of War; Land Forces in Vietnam and Their Weapons (by Ian V. Hogg); Air Forces in Vietnam (by Anthony Robinson); The Naval War in Vietnam (by Anthony Preston); and Irregular Forces of the Vietnam War (by Kevin Generous). Fox Butterfield (born 8 July 1939) is an American journalist who spent much of his 30-year career reporting for The New York Times. Butterfield served as Times bureau chief in Saigon, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Boston and as a correspondent in Washington and New York City. During that time, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize as a member of The New York Times team that published the Pentagon Papers, the Pentagon's secret history of the Vietnam War, in 1971 and won a 1983 National Book Award for Nonfiction for China: Alive in the Bitter Sea, an account of his experience as the first Times reporter allowed in China after the revolution. He also wrote All God's Children: The Bosket Family and the American Tradition of Violence (1995) about the child criminal Willie Bosket. In 1990, Butterfield wrote an article on the first African-American to be elected president of the Harvard Law Review, future president of the United States Barack Obama. This book is a remarkably comprehensive day-by-day chronology, presenting the sequence of events vividly and with thoughtful commentary. The bulk of the book is a day-by-day chronology of Vietnam from the 1940s through the early 1980s, with the emphasis on the French and American involvement in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. There are numerous photographs, plus articles on the land forces, air forces, the naval war, and irregular forces, plus biographies on the major figures.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition glossy color illustrated boards contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Introduction: George Washington on Slavery/Thomas Jefferson on Slavery; Index and Acknowledgments. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and both black-and-white and color drawings/paintings. "The were an eclectic group of men, but they shared a common goal: an independent nation with freedom and liberty for all. They were neither a uniform nor purely cohesive group. In fact, each felt free to take independent positions, to speak out and stand his own ground - in short, they epitomized the American spirit. These men became known as the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. From the first stirrings of the American Revolution to the formation and early years of the Republic - here are the stories of the men who led America to independence. This book takes a unique approach to a subject that has been defined traditionally as an elite circle of men. It recognizes that there were far more men who played important roles in the founding of our nation, than just the select few evoked by the term Founding Fathers. Furthermore, this book focuses on those who devoted the greater part of their lives to creating a nation largely through their words and service, rather than through exploits on the field of battle. These are the stories of the men who fought a war of words. Many of these words took the form of pamphlets, letters, books, proposals, legislation, treaties, resolutions, and judicial decisions and are excerpted throughout this book. These primary texts are woven with insightful commentary that lends historical context to the fight these brave men undertook for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You will read about the colonists' fight for freedom against the British monarchy; the events leading up to the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence; and the formation of a young nation struggling to form a more perfect union. But above all, you will see that the men who were responsible for the founding of the United States were not deities or paragons of pure virtue - they were human beings. There were bitter political rivalries among them, but the opposition only helped to strengthen the nation that they worked so hard to build. The Founding Fathers created institutions that were both strong and flexible, building in room for amendment, compromise, and change. Illustrated with hundreds of reproductions of historic documents and rare paintings, this book is a true celebration of our nation's Founding Fathers and their enduring imprint on a nation." - from the inner front jacket flap.
