DESCRIPTION - This innovative book is a set of experiments in the analysis of prose fiction. Using critical theories that emphasize how fictions are made and how they function, John Brushwood analyzes eight novels from nineteenth-century Spanish America that critics have usually studied as products rather than as processes. The novels range from a romantic evocation of the last Aztec emperor to contemporary social satire, thus offering a spectrum of problems in interpretation. In a given analysis, more than one theory may be useful. Therefore, Roman Jakobson or Roland Barthes, for example, may be the chief resource in a given chapter, but the ideas of other theorists may also be incorporated. In each case, some particular aspect of the meaning of the novel is addressed. Prominent among the theorists used, in addition to Jakobson and Barthes, are Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren, Wayne C. Booth, Gerard Genette, Tzvetan Torodov, Floyd Merrell, and Arnold Kettle. An introductory chapter locates the novels among other works of the same time and region, somewhat altering the traditional view of how the genre developed in Spanish America. The concluding chapter considers briefly how each of the analytical procedures might be applied to each of the other novels studied. This consideration shows how one approach may yield more understanding than another in a specific instance. It also shows how the several theories, despite their differences, are significantly interrelated, since all of them refer to the same phenomenon, the individual novel itself as the source of experience and the focus of concern. inventory #13539.
